I was able to get my father-in-laws old tracter running, it shifts good in all forward gears but being that I know nothing about tracters I can't find reverse on it. Is there a lever or something I've missed to get it into reverse. If someone could take pity on this dumb city boy so I can at least back it up it would be nice. The old tracter runs pretty good and I would like to see it get some use instead of rusting away.

Please advice and cost CIF mombasa Kenya.
Reply ASAP.

There's no trick to shifting into reverse, you just have to know where it is. There are 5 forwards and one reverse, three to a side. Sorry to say I can't remember the shift pattern on the 30 and I'm not at the tractor to look at it. With 4 tractors, I get confused sometimes. My 30 has the numbers and "R" cast in the shift lever base. If yours are worn off and unreadable, I would simply move the shifter very slowly until it drops into 3 slots on each side...one of them is reverse. Sometimes you may have to play with the clutch a little while trying to find a slot, ease it out a little and get a grind, then disengage it and see if the shifter will drop into that slot.

I'll try to remember to look at the pattern tonight and post it for you.

Good luck.
Don

My comments above were for a Massey Harris 30,not a Massey Ferguson 30. Missed that bit of info before I posted. Don't know if the models were alike. Anyway the technique for searching for the reverse position should be the same, unless,as you asked, there's a trick to it (like push down or pull up the shifter).

All I can relate is my H. Ferguson TO30. The 4speed trans. is 1st left forward,2nd left rear,3rd center forward,4th center rear, rev.- in neut.slide to right and lift up on lever then right rear. The starter is right-lift- forward.I don't know if the shift pattern was changed, perhaps the starter location, but I suspect not. I hope this is some use.
