I have a MH30, and as I understand it the transmissions are the same, but can't be certain.

My transmission is a 5 speed with reverse. If
you imagine an "H" with a line in the centre, the
reverse is dead center above neutral and first gear is center below neutral. If you have this arrangement then I'm pretty sure you have the same
transmission. My 2 and 3rd gear are cut on the same shaft
(main shaft). That's the shaft that couples with the clutch. Mine as a sprocket and chain where it couples with the clutch, sometimes it's a rubber grommet arrangement on some models. My manual says it's not necessary to take the shifting mechanism off. I don't want to read word for word from my
manual, but in essence you just take the sprocket off, the 3 bolt gasket holder, oil seal. To remove the bearing, just drift the shaft forward and it should come off readily.

(Q) "....The rest of the shaft assembly is then removed by raising the rear end of the shaft clear of the case and taking it out toward the rear".

Hope this helps.

Blue.

Thanks for the steering box ideas. I ended up using grease instead of heavy oil.

I had to completely dissamble my trans/differential while restoring my Pony so I know the inner workings all too well! You may have to do the same. Sounds like gears are not meshing properly. I have service/operator/parts manuals for Pony and would be happy to send any pages you need.
