I am a first time real tractor buyer. Today I ran into a M-F 65 along the highway. It a 4-cyl diesel, has a short and long lever on the tranny, double single acting hydraulic valves behind the levers. Sheetmetal is straight but paint faded bad. Also 3-pt. with a 6'blade. Any thoughts on this for a first tractor? I went over it rather quickly.

Hi Jeff, I have a 65 diesel and can tell you a good bit about them. First, your question, "for a first tractor"? It all depends on what you want to do with it. If you want to mow 2 acres of lawn, then it's too big. If you have more acrage to work, it's a fine machine. It's about 52 horsepower, has a 6-speed transmission, live pto, strong hydraulics and plenty of low end grunt. It will handle a 6' brush hog with ease and cut down anything you can push over with the tractor. A three bottom plow is easily handled, and with dual wheels for weight and traction, I've seen them pull a 4-bottom plow. The two hydraulic valves mounted in front of the seat are auxilliary valves, are hard to find since they no longer manufacture them and if in working order they are worth maybe $300 or more. They were probably used with either a hydraulic side mower or maybe a big set of drag disks that had hydraulic cylinders. If you have specific questions, e-mail me and I'll try to answer them for you.
