I can locally buy high sulfur diesel fuel that is allowed for "off-road" (farm) equipment use for $0.30 less per gallon than diesel fuel sold for road vehicles. Does anyone know if this high sulfur diesel fuel has any bad effect(s) on tractor engines? Someone told me the high sulfur fuel is actually better for diesel engines due to lubricating characteristics. I am aware that the sulfur is removed from road use diesel fuel to reduce air pollution.

I can tell you that with the injector pumps on our old diesel engines the high sulfur fuel is necessary for proper lubrication. The reason that the fuel is cheaper is because you aren't paying road tax on it. There is a very heavy fine if the EPA and other tree huggers catch you using it in an on road vehicle. But for tractor use, it's very much o.k.

I used to work at a John Deere dealer when the low sulfur fuel came out and for a time Deere wouldn't warranty fuel pumps if you ran low sulfur fuel because they didn't get enough lubrication. So if you have it I would use it. That's all I use in my old and new diesel engines.

The amount of additional pollution that ALL of our tractors will put out with high sulfur fuel is NEGLIGABLE!! I can tell you one thing, Greenpeace and all the other clowns like him will holler and carry on about low sulfur fuel, but just try and find him when you need help with the bill from replacing your fuel pump. If you can get high sulfur, get it and run it with pride. Believe me, your kids and your grandkids and their grandkids will still be here to enjoy nature and your old Massey.

Good luck.

Take your responsibility for the enviroment and dont use high sulfur fuel even if it's cheaper.

We must think about the next generation to, not only what's cheapest for the moment.

Don't you love your enviroment to?

I think that we all should try to keep the pollution down, and avoid anything that may harm our earth.

I am not a californian, just a farmer who has opened his eyes for enviromental problems.

The cheapest way is not always the best way you know.

If you run your tractor with high sulfur diesel it's not only the enviroment that comes to harm, but also your own health is at risk.

You can't avoid the exhaust when you are working with the tractor, you are sitting in it.

It's less hazardous when you are driving a truck or a car.

Greenpeace is typical of most of the whinning liberal tree huggers. Just like Al Gore, go around whinning about how we are destroying the environment, yet drives around in SUV's and probably consumes as much energy in their homes as anyone. AlGore felt soooo much pity for the environment that he had to ride around in his half mile long motorcade everywhere he went and flew around in a freakin' 747 (read VERY fuel efficient) every chance he got. A 747 to haul one sorry so called environmentalist around in. That's compassion for the environment my friends!!! The fact of the matter is that the very first conservationists were indeed farmers and the very painful truth to Greenpeace and all the other knee jerk reactionists is that farmers are still the main stream conservationists today. They just can't stand it because we are able to protect the environment, and our land and our source of income, without all the wailing and hair pulling that the tree huggers seem to think is so important. As I said in an earlier post, we don't pollute to any measureable degree with our high sulphur fuel and diesel engines. The mantra of the so called environmentalists is to raise the price of fuel so that the common folks can't afford it and have to do without. If you doubt me, read it right from the horse's mouth. Read "Earth in the Balance" written by an unknown author but claimed by AlGore. It's all there in black and white.
