I will soon be reassembling the rear axels on my '63 mf35 and need to know the correct way to preload the bearings, i.e., remove shims, add shims, ect.

Thanks,

Good morning, Konrad -

Very good question!

Objective is to have the axles set with spacers so the inner ends are a few thou clear of touching each other.

After the bearings and seals are checked, and bearings greased liberally, transmisson out of gear, one axle is installed and bolted up tight. Make sure both of the shrunk-on bearing retaining collars are tight.

I&T book says to have wheels removed when doing the adjustment. You will have one and probably both wheels off, by the sound of your message. If you have one brake drum on, make sure there is no drag from the shoes or drum.

Second axle installed with some shims, rotate axle as you snug up a couple of retaining studs. Other axle should rotate in reverse direction, then rotate in the same direction as the inner ends touch. If the other axle does not rotate in the same direction, the inner ends are not touching - remove shims one at a time until this happens, then remove one shim and bolt up. Recheck!

May require several tries. Be careful not to cut the seal with the axle splines when removing and installing the axle.

Hope this helps.
