i am buying a MF tractor with front loader id plate on right side loader arm states model 8578-AO ser # 1018.Six cyl eng. the guy i am buying it from thinks its a 44-6 ?

Mike, You may have a 44-6. You said M-F. Did you mean M-H? Massey-Ferguson never made a 44-6. The serial no. is stamped into the top left center of the transmission housing. It should read something like this... 446GIRF1001 for row crop and... 446G1SF1001 for a wide front. SER #'S FOR STD 1001-2000:1947 2001-2600:1948 2601-2729:1950 SER #'S FOR RC 1001:1946 1002-2982:1947 2983-4754:1948 4755-5254:1949 5255-5508:1950 5509-5928:1951 My cousin has one of these and it can be seen at antiqueequipment.com.
