I just purchased a MF-135, 1973 year and I have a question. The brakes are non responding unless you jump on the pedals and then it is slow to respond. It is a 1973 diesel perkins engine. How hard is it to change the brake disks? It does not have a drum brake set up so I assume that the disks are where the axles meet the differential. Has anyone had to change brakes on this model and how hard is it? Any information would be appreciated. I do not own a shop manual, but it couldnt be that hard? Thanks in advance for any information.

Is the 135 MF you purchased a 135 MF Orchard Tractor? The 135 MF Orchard model does not have brake drums, they have dry disc brakes with planetary type final drives. This allowed the tractor too be equipped with 16.1" rear rims. The regular drum type brake system will not fit in the 16.1" rims. The brakes, ( disc type ), were the same type used on the later model MF 165. The axle housing were square on the later models and round on the earlier MF 165. The service manual for a MF 165 will give you the information needed for the brakes on a MF 135 Orchard model. Another way to determine if it is a orchard model will be the steering system. The orchard model had two steering cylinders, one mount at each front wheel verse the regular MF 135 that had the steering cylinder located in the steering housing. Hope this will help!

I have had the same problem. The brakes are esentially similar to auto drum brakes, except mechanical actuation. The may not need new linings. The problem is that they becom glazed. You can sand the devil out of the linings, by hand with fairly coarse sand paper (wear a mask!). You should ahve the drums turned by a machine shop. This should make it stop!
