I have a MF-50 industrial tractor which is the T/L/B version of a MF-165. The right final drive was so loose that I could see the right wheel wobble. When I raised it off the ground, I could shake the wheel on the stub axle laterally. After taking off the wheel, it was confirmed that the wheel stub shaft was loose causing the outboard seal to wallow out and leak. After taking apart this unit and only finding damaged, leaking seals, I need to put it back together with the correct bearing pre-load. Apparently, someone had been into this unit, and either put too many shims in it or overlapped them (probably the same person who left the detents and shims out of the shuttle shift). The Massey Ferguson repair manual calls for setting this unit into a fixture and making some measurements - first I don't have one and secondly I doubt if the local MF dealer has one. I've taken the entire axle housing off because I have to replace the inner seal and brakes. I stood the axle housing on its end and used a flat file to remove any burrs from any of the mating surfaces. Then, I placed the final drive unit onto the flanged end of the axle housing. This way, gravity is holding it together. After aligning and lightly snugging the bolts, I then, took a feeler gauge and measured the gap at about .012". I placed .010" MF shims between the ring gear and housing and snugged the bolts down. Now's there's no shake and no wobble. The unit rotates freely with no binding. Unless somebody throws a red flag, I'm going to re-install this unit back into the tractor when the seals arrive using the .010" shims. This will give about .001" to .002" compression to pre-load the tapered roller bearings. Am I missing something, or is it easier than I thought? Is there a better or right way to do this? Your opinions, please. Ken McWilliams Dayton, OH
