I have an opportunity to buy a 1970 MF 165 in very good to excellent condition, has rear wheel weights, 4cyl gas, 2600 hours, Multi-power, etc. A real nice unit.

Would you mind giving me some ideas as to value ? (Canadian guys too...Hello Jack in N.B., etc.)

Also, is there anything that I should be aware of or watch out for?

Thanks, Wade

Hi Wade, Just wondering if you have made a decision or if you are still searching for your MF 165. Do you have another tractor or is this your first in the MF ? I live in Cole Harbour and use a snow blower for removing snow, We do keep a second home at Port George and that is where I keep the 135MF with a back blade. The problem with this at the present time at Port George there is about 70cm of snow in the driveway and no place to push the snow, so am waiting for some mild weather and spring planting to gets lots of use with the tractor, It is really more of a toy, as I have to think up projects for use with the tractor. The 8n at Cole Harbour most of the time I take it out of the garage and let it idle outdoors for a couple of hours. Have a good one. Murray

Wade, If you can get a 165 gasser between 4,000 to6,000 and you know that it's not been worked to death; then you'd be ok. although, i would think that 4,000 to 4,500 would be more like it. Call Caldwell Implement in Stillwater Ok. This guy [Robert Caldwell] eats massey fergusons! Incredable mechanic and knows well the worth of machinery. He just recently built from the ground up[including a new block] a 4 cyl. perkins diesel on my 165. Good luck, from Oklahoma.

Hi Mike;

Thanks for the tip. I will be in touch with Mr. Caldwell.

All the best from snowy Nova Scotia.

Wade, Caldwell has a 165 diesel in what I would consider A-1 in both mechanical & cosmetic condition for 5,000. Stay dry in the Great White North. Mike, in Okla.

Hi, Bought a 1970 165D at an auction with new rear tires with 4500 hrs for $3800,that needed a clutch and had multipower oil leak. I spent a $1000.00 in parts fixing it up. Have another 165 without multipower, the multipower is great. Tires for a 165 can run close to $1000 for tires tube and fluid. I saw a 165 gas sell at an auction for $4000 last summer. All figures in US dollars. Bill

Hi Bill;

Thanks for the input. From what I understand, so far, $ 6,000 is not a bad price for a unit in the condition this one is. The tires are all v. good and all is supossed to work well. Have you had any experience with the gas engine not starting well? Also, would I expect that dry brakes are weak?

Multipowers caused some problems,and would
free wheel down a hill,kind of dangerous.

Multi-power will freewheel in low. You will have engine braking in Hi multi-power. Always operate in Hi multi power and when an extra surge of power is needed shift down with multi power. Shift back up as soon as you can.

Thank you Mike and Phil. I understand that M-powr is a nice option, but as with anything else, it has to be used correctly.

Hello Wade, I have heard here in N.S. that the 4 cyl gas engines are hard to start. I did purchase a MF 135 two years ago in Middleton, Anna. Valley, for $4500.00, perfect tractor, 3 cyl diesel. At the time when I purchased mine the person I purchased mine from did have a 165 gas engine that he said would give me for tha same price as the 135. I'am glad I took the 135 diesel. A goog person to ask advice in N.S. is the guy on Hammond's Plains Road outside Halifax that sells used tractors. It could be the info given me on the gas engine hard starting is all wrong advice, as for the MF tractors thay are great, although I am also restoring a 1948 Ford 8n. Thanks murray

Hi Murray;

Thanks for your note. $ 4,500 sounds like a good deal! I've also heard that the gas can be tough to start. Anyone else out there with comments? Why is this?

I know who you mean as far as Hammond's Plains. I'll stop in and ask him for an opinion - he seems to know his stuff.

Thanks again,

Wade

Howdy,
Its a gas! Diesel would bring more than the gas.Still the 165 is a great old tractor.Here in Tennessee,the Diesel 165s have been selling for 4500 to 6000$ and the gas version going for 3800 to 5000$ in good shape.It seems the 165 and 255 Masseys are holding a decent resale value! GOOD LUCK..... ..... ..... ....DEANO

Thanks DEANO. Interesting to hear of the diff. in value between the gas and diesel. Owner is asking $ 6,000 Cdn. I hope to take a closer look this weekend. Thanks again,

Wade
