Forgive the questions of a novice, but can anyone explain the differences between the older 35 Super Deluxe and the newer 135 (if both have gas engines)? What are their respective weak areas and strengths? What about the commonality of finding desireable features (such as power steering)?

I beg to differ with Mike as well...

Maybe the Perkins gas engine he saw rebuilt had "10,700" hours, probably turned over...

I'd rate the Perkins engine bullet-proof. The gas is the same block as the diesel. You may want to call it a "Heavy-Duty" gas version over other mfrs. gas units.

Because the 35 & 135 were top sellers all over the world, general tractor parts are plentiful and should be for some time into the future. I'll stick my neck out and say probably more so than the Ford xN' series especially around the world. With that said, most parts are cheap or very reasonable compared to newer tractors.

You have to remember, in it's day, those tractors never seen front end loaders, and they were/still are the workhorses of the smaller sized farms. They didn't have the "beefed up" front ends nor the hydraulic output of "today's" tractor... because they weren't made nor designed today... you're going back 30 - 40 years. (and those designs are in the late 1930's and early 40's)

So all in all, I think it's pretty amazing, a number of them are still going strong with a 60/70 year old design...

Paul again thay are bolth good tractors. I do not agree with Mike on the reliability of the perkins gas engine, mine has a little over 3000 hrs on it. Short of tuneups and regular maintenance a valve cover gasket and a front seal is all i have done to it. maybe i have been lucky. Also it will pull a 3-14 MF plow in the sand here and burn less than a gallon of gas an hour, also i use it to move snow in the winter, I have a 7 foot farm king blower and a 1600ft. driveway and the rig has never let me down. As far as auctions thay are a poor place to value equipment I go to many of them a year and have seen deals and I have seen people pay way to mutch it depends on location and the time of the year. my opinion. good luck, Lee.

The 35 was a better tractor and will out sell
a 135 at auction.The 4 cylinder is a much better
engine.I'd stay away from the 3 cylinder gas,it
has a lot of problems.Seen them need an overhaul
at 700 hours,also carb. problems.3 cylinder
diesel was a good engine.The 4 cylinder
connential gas engine was available in both.
It was also a good reliable engine.

Now that is info that I can use! What about any deficiencies on the 35 that you know of? Say weak aux hydros, poor power steering design, funky tranys, etc?

from another novice, I'll try. the newer 135 gas has a 3 cyl perkins gas engine (very economical). The 35 had a continental 4 cyl. also a very good engine. one point, perkins parts are fairly cheap compaired to other engines and easily found, continental parts are expensive not as easily found. (my opinion). If you removed the tin from bolth tractors and disregarding the engines you would see little difference in the driveline. I own a 1969 135 with power steering, a good tractor but I think the weakest part of the tractor is the steering, a real pain to adjust but still a nice feature. Also the hydalic system (auxillary) is a poor system. Other than my opinions thay are bolth great tractors. Hope this helps, good luck.
