Where do I start?

Since I got out of the Army and came home, I IDed the Massey Harris tractor as a 44. I haven't managed to get the serial numbers yet for posting here. The tractor seems to be in decent shape, although i haven't cleaned enough stuff from around or on top of it to really tell. I did notice that the steering box seems to have been disconnected from the front wheels and is hanging below the tractor. What or where, is a good starting point to determine whether or not this tractor is suitable for restoration, a parts tractor or the junk pile?
If I were looking over an old 4x4 truck I would know where to start. I have no experience with tractors, but I am mechanically inclined but just need a few pointers to get started.

Thanks,

Pat

If the sheet metal serial number plate is missing from the side of the front frame, scrape the dirt and crud from machined surface on top of the bull gear case immediately behind the transmission cover and in front of the bull gear cover. The serial number will be stamped there.

Find out where the hanging parts go and put them back. Next fix the leaks and check shaft endplay while you are there. Do a good tuneup if it runs, ajust the valves, ignition tune-up fix the belts and hoses that look groty. Its not much different than fixing a 4x4. Be sure the brakes are ok and ckeck the clutch.

When you determine the serial no.of your tractor, go to www.tractortips.com/make_model/makes.html This will provide the specs. for it, incl. manufacture yr. HOORAA

Don't get discouraged by a little steering stuff hanging out. Start ripping, make a lot of diagrams (and label them well), bag and tag all your bolts, nuts, etc. to correspond with your diagrams, then come on back here and ask more questions. You'll get all the answers you need. Try the Tractor Talk section too, there seems to be a lot more action there.
