I spotted a "hedgerow tractor" a couple weeks ago, with a tree growing up between the loader and tractor which I would guess to be at least 6 years old.

Managed to find the owner who wants to fix it someday. He says its first problem is the distributor is worn out.

So in an effort to help him get started, I looked and found he can get a re-built one for $155. Does anyone know of a cheaper way to rebuild the distributor? This may be a stop-light for the guy instead of motivational help, because he has to split the tractor to fix his tranny next.

Hate to see a tractor rot away, so any feedback will be appreciated. Thanks.

Does it need to be fully reconditioned? the condensor, and ignition points can be purchased for single figure sums as can the rotor, if the distributor cap is shorting or worn these can be purchased new cheaply, in uk prices i would estimate 35 for all the above. Just be careful of the bearing at the bottom of the cup - check for side play in the shaft, and also make sure the cam operating the points isnt too worn. If any of these are faulty look for a second hand unit to repair. one final point, check the springs on the (Centrifugal)timing advance mechanism just below the plate holding the points and condensor, you should be able to rotate the rotor by hand a fraction of a turn and it should spring back.
