I don't neccesarily want to turn this into a farm toy forum, but it seems like a lot of the postings on here are related to farm toys.

I'm sure not an expert, but I've been playing around (no pun intended) with the farm toy collecting hobby for about 17 years, and I'm sure willing to try to help anyone with any questions.

Even worse than that, as a kid, I go back to John Deere toys in the late '40s, so I've seen a few of them come an go.

Stan

Hello Stan,I just read an old post where you stated you had a JD 60 w/lite on tue seat. While back in Okla. last year a cousin gave me the same tractor. Is this a desirable toy to start a collection with and if so could you let me know what plow would be correct to match up with it. The tractor needs alittle work and I have ordered the parts needed to restore it. Tks Roy

I started my "hobby" some 40 years ago. We lived minutes from a thriving Deere dealership. Every birthday, or Christmas was a reason to get another Deere toy. It was the early sixties, and the 4020 was KING of the fields. I trashed a lot of my toys, but for some strange reason, I kept most of my Deere toys in top shape, boxes included. I kept on buying them, through my highschool years. The late 70's, and early 80's, see a "gap" in my collection. I've bought a few from that era, to fill in the gap. From around 1984 on, I seldom missed any Deere toys. The collection has grown to include hundreds of older, and all the newer stuff. It was a hobby for me, when it wasn't even a recognised hobby. Nowdays, there's thousands of "collectors". Few bargains to be had. But I still have my first toys, and a whole lot of dust has "collected" over the years. John

John,

It sounds like you were a lot more serious than I was, for sure. There was a time, from about the early '60s to the late '80s, that I didn't care much one way or the other. Then I got into the nostalgic stage of life and started collecting.

The only thing I have from my childhood is a closed flywheel A that I bought at the Indiana State Fair in 1947 or so for $1.50. Repainted it and replaced the front wheels that my brother's dog (mine knew better) ate.

Have picked up a 60 w/ headlight on seat, a loader for the 60, a 12A combine (NIB but dusty), a KWA (I think) disk, a No. 44 plow (w/ lever), a 14-T baler (no wagon hitch, though), and have my son's 3020, 4 bottom plow, wheel disk (crank hitch), 4 row planter, and a long-nose picker...those all complete my aim of having toys of the stuff we had when I was a kid. The 3020 and associated equipment were after I left home. Note that I said "long-nose picker", not "long nose-picker"...it makes a difference, doesn't it?

Thanks for the response. I hope the spring planting is going as planned. Talked with a guy from Piper City, Illinois (on U.S. 24 about 30 miles into Illinois) and his sons had all the corn planted by April 16. Whatever happened to waiting until May 20 to avoid the corn borers? Things have changed, I guess.

Best regards,

We've just about got all of our corn in. Maybe one or two days of dry weather, and it'll be finished. With insecticides, seed treatments, and improved hybrids, corn growing has changed in the last few years. We hope to have it all germinated, and out of the ground in April nowdays. With my "day job", our schedule is quite busy this time of the year. I have one employee that farms too. He is still working with beef cattle. I can't imagine doing that AND working a full time job. I'm still adding to my collection. Everytime I see something that "needs" to be included, I try to buy it. One of my grandchildren is showing much interest in collecting farm toys. SHE goes with us to most of the shows, and is always willing to help, when I take a notion to clean the dust off of all the tractors. (I have a feeling she'll end up with my collection some day) Well, I gotta get with the program. Time for work. Talk with you later. John
