Did the first Ds have a hand brake or any kind of brake? If they didn't have a brake the first year-s what year did they get a brake?

Yep, they had brakes! It was an "emergency brake" or "service brake". It was installed inside the transmission, and you controlled it with a lever on the left side of the transmission case. In 1937 (#130700) it was changed to outside the transmission case, and was controlled with a pedal.

The earlier lever, in my opinion, isn't in a very convienient spot, trying to reach it from around the steering wheel!
