Clooney & John T,

First, thanks for the previous information for checking tolerances on the crankshaft on a '51 G.

Clooney,
I took your advice and bought a dial indicator and checked both sides on the outside of the crankshaft as close to the main bearings as I could get. I did a reading on the crankshaft in 1/4 turn increments. The readings I got were between .004 - .006 on the flywheel side. Most were around .005. However, on the clutch side, I am getting .003 for most of the readings with a few positions showing .005. What would be your recommendation on this? I guess this is the egg shape wear you were talking about. Do you think I should add more shims on the clutch side or would it be ok to leave it alone?

John T, I tried to check the drag your were talking about and it doesn't appear to have any with these current settings. I hope I got the right feel for this.

This will mainly be a show and occassional pull tractor. Thanks again for all of your help. You guys sure have a wealth of information when it comes to these tractors.

JD-G, depending on the bearings in your "G". You are probably ok where it's at. The spec is .002"-.006"... If you have the later non-split bearings you are pretty well stuck with what you have anyway. If you have the adjustable [split] bearings I think I would pull the flywheel side shim packs out-[be very careful you don't lose a shim or mix them up] & measure the pack height, then remove 1 thin shim from the highest pack. [that will lower the bearing clearance 1/2 the shim thickness removed]..
~You shouldn't feel any drag with the bearing clearance you have now & the drag method only works with the rods disconnected from the crankshaft, then keep evenly removing shims from one bearing until you can feel a pronounced drag while turning the crankshaft, then add about .003" back
~With your out-of-round crankshaft do not try to use Plasti-Gage as that can lead to incorrect bearing clearance & possibly a tight bearing. Plasti-Gage works good on a round crankshaft but not worth a hoot on an elliptical crank bearing.....

Hey G Guy, If you have removeable shim type bearings, the main thing I remember was how much difference it makes dependign on the torque applied to the cap bolts. Therefore, when measuring the bearing to crank clearance, be sure it's at the recommended torque, because I saw a big difference as I torqued thigns down which is what you would expect. Im sorry, I dont have any spec books of the allowable tolerances or clearances on your tractor, many use the plasti guages to measure the clearance between the crank to bearing surface. The "drag test" I mentioned earlier was not any exact measurement, but a seat of the pants feel for when the bearing got too tight (could feel the drag) to add 2 more shims (1 each side) back and then quit.

It sounds like you have some egg shaping which the dial indicator is picking up, but the clutch side dont sound too bad, the 003 sounds reasonable, but the 005 may be getting near or exceeding the limit. If someonme has the exact allowable specs on out of round or bearign to crank tolerances for the tractor, you might be able to button her back down.

Good Luck and thanks for letting us all know how youre getting along. Im sure someone has the specs you need. Ol John T
