Clooney...several weeks ago I posted about a sudden loss of p/s on "my project" 70D. I surmised it sheared a woodruff key in the pump as there was zero p/s action. Previously, on the same tractor, I had lost complete steering control as the steering wheel would spin 360 degrees w/o any corresponding movement of the front wheels. I thought it sheared a pin or set screw in the worm gear mechanism and I simply replaced the entire assembly and was back in operation. When the p/s quit I thought maybe the sheared pin/set screw found it's way to the pump and jammed the gears, shearing the woodruff key. After getting advice about removing the pump for repair (lengthy project), I thought I would make sure it was a "pump output" problem before tearing everything apart. I jacked up the front end and put it on stands and tried to turn the wheels manually. It would not turn at all to the right and only about 20 degrees to the left (?). I pulled the drain plug on the p/s pedastal and no p/s fluid came out(?). I could see ice crystals in the plug hole, so I put my torpedo heater on the pedastal and after about 30 minutes I could manually turn the wheels in both directions full travel. I started the tractor and ran it for about 15 minutes and the p/s would work, but very erratic and sticking/binding at certain wheel positions. I shut the tractor off and pulled the drain plug again on the pedastal and the fluid ran out with noticeable water droplets in the oil. I checked the drained oil tonight (temp below zero) and it looks like a malted milk shake with ice crystals in the oil. Finally my question...hows does water get into the p/s system? I've never had this happen before.

Not to upset you, but if that is a "female 70 I doubt that you will win come spring-summmer-or fall.

Blksmok, I wouldn't turn my back on that demon diesel if I were you. That thing is liable to kick you.
~About the only way I know water could get in [other than condensation] is through the filler cap vent. Or maybe the filler cap was left open with the nose off. I suppose if it was left outside for years it could just be condensation.

Clooney....it did sit outside many years and the "sheet metal hole plug" over the p/s filler cap/vent was missing. The sintered metal filter in the cap does have a small hole (size of #6 finishing nail) in it where water could enter. The dipstick also shows signs of corrosion (pitting) on it indicating moisture in the fluid for sometime. This demon 70D has kicked me figuratively, not literally (yet), many a time. I swear it has a smirk on it's face every time I walk past it. It's been given a temporary reprieve due to the cold weather here in Wisconsin, but come spring we will do battle once more. Later.
