I have posted on this problem in the past and received some good thoughts but no cure. Here is my story-bought a running 520 with a broken manifold(couldn't hear anything but open exhaust) Pulled tractor apart for complete restoration. Replaced valves, guides, decked head, standard rings and bearings, Everything looked fine. Loud tapping noise especially on decelleration. Tried valve adjustment, not the problem, took pushrods and rocker assembly off my perfectly quiet 530 and bolted on 520, did not alter the noise a bit. Using a stethoscope checked every thing form the drawbar to the front grill screens, noise is loudest at the right hand rockershaft mounting stud(where the valve cover bolt goes). Pulled engine down again, replaced camshaft, cam followers, and the piece the followers ride in, put it all back together without a lot of confidence as I hadn't found anything apparently wrong, and the noise is absolutley the same! The tractor runs perfectly. Fanshaft/governor gears quiet, powertrol pump quiet, runs strong under sustained full load, no smoke, no ridge in the cylinders for rings to bang against, flywheel tight and true, What am I missing? What does a worn wrist pin sound like? The only thing I can seem to syncronize the noise with is #2 exh tappet, the noise is not effected by killing cylnders. Sorry for the long story, any thoughts will be appreciated. Al

From what I see so far, it sounds like some relatively minor piston slap, or a wrist pin.... Just a pre-mature guess, FWIW....!!!

Alcgar, those noises are hard enough to find when working on the tractor let alone over the internet.

..... .A Few Things To Check....

~Is the noise once per rev, or 1 /2 engine speed at a cam speed?
~Does shorting either cylinder change the noise?
~Does putting a load on the hydraulic pump change the noise?
~Does running with the PTO engaged or dis-engaged change the noise?
~Does putting a PTO load on it change the noise.
~Does running with the clutch dis-engaged change the noise?
~If power steering, does turning the steering wheel change the noise?
~Does retarding the ign timing change the noise?
~Do you get the noise when towing the tractor in gear with the ignition off? ~Do you get the noise when towing the tractor in gear with the ignition off & spark plugs out? ~Can you get a similar noise when grabbing the fan & rocking it within it's play?
~ How much crankshaft end play do you have?
~Try increasing the crankshaft end play & using the clutch lever to lightly load the crank play to the right --[if the crank thrust washer is worn the crank throw could be hitting the cam gear, this should show that].
~Drain the 1st reduction cover & put in extra & cold 140 weight & see if you get a noise change [it won't stay in there long so you will have about 1 run to evaluate the change].
~Pull the crankcase cover & run each piston to the rear & reach in with your hand & wedge your finger between the piston & rod side & have someone rock the flywheel & feel for loose piston pins.
~Make sure the flywheel isn't hitting the starter or cover.
~If you can post back the answers to some of the above maybe we can help you isolate the noise.

That's quite a homework assignment you gave me!
the noise is at cam speed
shorting cyls doesn't change noise
loadind hyd pump-no change
pto engaged or not no change
pto loaded no change
clutch disengaged or engaged no change
turning steering wheel no change
retarding timing no change
flywheel is not hitting cover
all your other suggestions need to be investigated and will be asap.
Is it possible to pull the crankcase cover without removing the governor and hyd pump? the only time I have been in there the hood, gas tank, governor, etc have been removed. Thanks Al

Alcgar, you should be able to work that cover out without removing the governor & pump but you won't be able to see much in there with the shift quadrant & steering support in the way.
