Carb Adjust on A

I've gotten my A to run great at idle and about half throttle. But when I open her up, it runs good for a few seconds and then starts to lose RPM. When the RPM drops, the governor opens the throttle. It then hesitates, and comes back strong with black smoke out of the stack. And then it repeats this over and over. I think I've tried every position of the load needle. Any suggestions?
Thanks,

Denny, Phil gave you good advice below on that choke spring & pin, start by checking that. But that usually gives you a rich blubbering condition not a lean surge. [that black smoke you are seeing is the main well emptying its fuel after throttle up]..

~If the choke is working correctly the next place I would look is to pull the main nozzle out & make sure ALL the little side holes are open, [if those are plugged it will act like yours is now].

~If the main nozzle is open & the holes are not plugged, make sure the main well by-pass hole is open [if it has one]. That will be the hole in the side of the stem that adds additional fuel to the main well [they rust shut & are hard to find when rusted shut].

~If all ok per above., make sure the spring is under the main nozzle & the load needle is the correct one for the carb you have.

~While you have the float bowl off, re-set the float to parallel with the top of the float bowl & verify the float is not hanging up on the side of the float bowl. Also make sure the float can drop far enough to fully open the needle valve.

~Look into the carb bore & make sure the throttle valve is sealing the same all the way around & centered in the bore.

~You might want to pull the bowl vent baffles from the top inside of the float bowl & verify the bowl vent is open [a plugged bowl vent can cause all kinds of problems when the bowl vacuum goes up under throttle up conditions. [my guess is this is your problem].

~Let me know {E-Mail me] if you need additional information & I will send you a carb picture showing the carb holes that need cleaning.

Thanks for the tips. I've gone through the sediment bowl completely and it flows like crazy. I haven't tried the base of the carb. This is a good suggestion. I've had the carb apart and stuck wires in all the orifices - but I may have missed one so will do it again. Maybe a piece of dirt in the load circuit. The float is between 3/8" and 1/2". The answers there somewhere. Thanks,

Hey Denny, I have good luck using guitar strings or mig welding wires to clean passages, and as far as the three passages located behind the brass drill plugs, I use the No. 40 and 53 aircraft drill bits from Roberts. That affests idle, but you say it idles good. If you can get the nozzle out, I would clean and wire brush it also. Does it have a straight manual choke or one with the spring under the housing???? When you check the air cleaner, you might also wanna check if the choke butterfly plate is actually opening and closing (and stays there) and not free to flop open and close on those spring types which could cause her to shut the air off and over richen (black smoke) like phil told you below. Hi Denny, a first thought is the float level. If its way too low, it can idle okay but starve for fuel under load. Another thought is a restricted fuel flow problem, either in the carb or from the tank. It may have plenty fuel if at idle, but not when a load or high RPM calls for more fuel.

1. If you open the carbs bottom drain cock, does gas flow continous about 1/16 stream??

2. If not, if you remove the fuel line from the carb, does gas flow its internal thickness continuous?????

3. If both those tests pass and the float level is okay, does a slight choke make her run okay????? ??

4. Have you removed the air cleaner bottom to insure no clogs there????

You say you adjusted the load needle, (out at least a turn I assume and more???), does she ever richen and black smoke if its way out?????

If none of that helps, Im thinking a clogged carb circuit of nozzle maybe, so if you have good flow both places and load needle adjustments dont help, and youre sure its a carb not an ignition problem or flow from the tank problem and you have good clean water free gas, I would purchase a carb kit and disasemble her and clean all passages and the nozzle and check the float and let us know what happens.

Good Luck n God Bless. Ol John T Nordhoff in Indiana

If it is a late model A (~1950 or newer) you might check the coil spring on the choker shaft, they sometimes cause your symptoms.

TX Denny,

I would check the fuel flow from the tank. Open the drain on the carb bowl and see if you have a good full stream for 15-30 seconds. If not look for a stopped up sediment bulb, fuel line, or in-line fuel filter if so equiped.
If that doesn't turn anything up my second idea would be something in the carb is stopped up on the load side. Possibly the nozzle??

Hope this help get you popping at full throttle.
