I have a 1946 model A that won't start. I set the points at .015 but got no fire at spark plug. It also has no fire comming from the bottom jumper hole. I put plug wire in main jumper hole (top) and held it close to head while cranking. The spark was weak (yellow and only about 1/16 of an inch). If moved any further away I get no spark. Is this the coil or condenser and points. It has a Wico C mag. The mag impulse trips fine. Thanks for any help.

Good Morning Dave, If youre at least getting some spark, a little tune up and adjustign and cleaning and wire brushing maybe can get you to a good blue spark.

1. Remove the cap and clean and inspect it for cracks or carbon paths and clean and wire brush the brass terminals that lead to the plug terminals. Also clean and wire brush the ends of the rotor tips.

2. Inspect the points, and if they are burned or pitted or corroded, replace them. If they are okay except for a slight gray oxidation, you may get by with cleanign them (not to asbrasive though) and check to see if they are gapped 0.015 to 0.017.

3. Inspect any kill switch wires to any exterior terminal post to be sure no wires are grounded out.

4. The mags impulse spring and trip assembly has to be hard to turn over past snap and then give a clear loud distinct snap when she fires. If its weak, it gives a weak spark.

5. With the cap off, run a wire from the mags steel case ground to within in about 1/8 away from the little steel button (clean it also) on the coil where the caps spring fits. Then when you snap the mag over, you should see a good blue spark from the wires end to the coils high voltage output button. If you get a good blue spark there but not at the plugs, you may have a bad cap or wires or plug itself. You need to be using wire core wires, not carbon automotive supressor types.

6. A bad condensor can cause a weak spark, but its more often the points or a corrosion or weak spring problem.

7. If new points gapped properly and a good cap cleaning and good wires and plugs still yields a weak spark and the spring is strong, I would remove the coil and clean (wire brush off all corrosion) all the metal poles and clean the rotor because rust on any of those parts weakens the spark.

If the coil assembly and rotor are free of rust and the points and/or condensor are replaced and gapped and good wires and plugs still yields a weak spark, post back with what you did or tried and the results and we will give it another go. If she runs real good but hard to start and a weak spark at crank speeds, the spring may be weak.

Good Luck n God Bless America

Dave, the usual cause of a poor spark on the C is corrosion. Start with the points & either replace them, or clean ALL the oxidation from both point surfaces [pull them out to do this so you can see what you are doing]. Set the points to .015 on high spot on the points cam.

~Next move on to the condenser, make sure it isn't corroded where it grounds to the mag case.

~Then if still no spark, pull the coil out [remember where the wires attach] & make sure the coils center iron core is not rusted up, if so clean it of rust.

~Look into the mag & see if there is rust on the magnetic rotor & field laminates, if so pull the mag farther apart & clean the rust from those parts.

~Make sure the impulse pawls are holding & allow a good solid snap as the mag is rotated. If you don't hear a good solid impulse snap when rotating the tractor flywheel-[mag on tractor], or when rotating the impulse cup-[mag off tractor], suspect corrosion or broken parts/spring in the impulse coupling area.

~Look at the cap for any signs of cracks & carbon tracking & make sure the inner cap is making good contact to the coil button . Check the [cap] rotor for carbon trails & being too loose on the shaft.

~The C is a very easy mag to work on & not much goes wrong with it so a good cleaning & inspection will usually get you going.

I do a lot of mag repair. These 50 yr old mags unless they have been rebuilt recently usually need to come completely apart cleaned, mag rotor recharged ,bushings ,brgs, points, cond, coil, rotor sometimes new cap. Earl in Illinois
