I have a 58 620. when i bought the tractor, the battery was hooked up in the negative ground setup. it was not however charging. i had my generator rebuilt and am going to order a voltage regulator as well. i was just wondering if the negative ground is correct or if it should be posative ground. thanks in advance for any help.

Good Morning Michael, Your tractor came from the factory as positive ground, but the new generator will charge either ground system PROVIDED the Voltage Regulator is a type that will work either way OR is a neg grnd and you remain neg grnd OR you re-configure the battery to the type VR you have.

Once its all connected and wired and youre sure the new VR will work either pos or neg grnd., (many will and many are neg grnd only, which is what you now have anyhow) you need to polarize it by momentarily jumping a wire form the regulator's BAT terminal over to its GEN or ARM (whichever its labeled) and it should yield a small spark and then youre done.

If the ammeter reads backwards, reverse its leads. We need to know if you have an internal or external coil ballast resistor to advise how to wire the coil, because if its got an external ballst resistor and is now neg ground, the little neg coil terminal should go to the distributor and the lil + terminal get battery power. Look on the pedestal for a white ceramic resistor. Thats an external coil ballast. Also if it has that, the voltage on the coils input when switch is on should read in the 6 to 8 volt and NOT 12 range.

Hook her up and polarize it and see what the ammeter does and if shes charging, and if not, post back as much info as you can muster up and we will further advise.

God Luck n God Bless Ol John T Nordhoff in Indiana

Michael, to answer your question, your 620 is [or should be] positive ground. If your battery is hooked up negative ground now it might have just been installed backwards by the last owner, or the electrical system could have been changed around to work correctly at negative ground.

~You can install the battery the correct way [positive ground], & get the charging system operating then determine if the ammeter reads correctly [if it doesnt you can swap the wires so it reads correctly]. Whatever ground you go with on that 620 make sure the ignition coil has the same terminal [+ or -] going to the distributor as the battery has going to ground.

~When buying a new regulator, make sure it is for the ground you are using, positive or negative or for both grounds [not all regulators are bi-directional]

~After installing the new regulator follow the directions that came with the regulator for polarizing the generator [the generator must be polarized to charge in the direction of your tractor battery polarity]....

~If after you get it together & charging [or not charging] & the ammeter reads backwards or it doesnt charge correctly, post back with the problem for trouble shooting hints based on what you are experiencing

you will need to polarize the generator/switch the leads on the ammeter. Also switch the wires on the coil. That's about it.....
