Another first timer question about my A?

I would like to change the oil in this A I bought and was wandering how many quarts it takes to fill it. I did find the dip stick but it seems to high on the stick and I don't want to overfill it. Also does the oil go in under the breather cap? I havn't started it since buying it and don't want to hurt the motor. Someone told me the other day the flywheel turns too easy, they think it has low compression. When the pitcocks are shut it does turn harder. Should they be open when starting it. It has electtric start. I know this is a lot of questions, I havn't gotten a Owners Manual yet but will this week. Thanks for your help.

My 49 A holds 11 quarts(I usually round it off to 3 gal.). I had a 70 that had the aftermarket dipstick, but it looked like it would work on the earlier 2-cyls also.
As for overtightening the filter cover, I did. And I had a real FUN time changing the housing.

don't know of an A with a dipstick....On mine you check the engine oil by screwing out the small plug under the clutch, the one with holes in the side. Crankcase is full just when oil starts to drip from here. Add oil at the big pipe cap plug above the clutch. Think it's 8 qts with a new filter. Filter is under the crankcase big round canester with a cap screw holding it in. I get my filters from JD but probably NAPA etc has them. DO NOT tighten that oil filter cap back on too tight!! It can distort the canister and cause problems!

If the starter is on top and petcocks near the plugs it is a 46 or earlier. We always opened them on our 46 2 fuel which had a 6 volt starter, but I don't on my 50 A or 49 D. Both have 12 volt starters, and the petcocks on the A are below the block.

sounds like you may have purchased the wrong manual if you have a dipstick. JD 2cyl didnt have a dipstick until the 20 series (1956-58). The letter series simply have a check level plug. It is located beneath the clutch pulley. Its not the one that is long and skinny. That is the oil pressure adj. The one you are looking for is a needle with holes in it, but it will simply look like a bolt head until you take it out. It takes a 3/4 inch wrench on a B, but it may or may not be different on an A. The best of luck with your new toy. They are a lot of fun.

An A takes 8 quarts of oil, where ya put it in depends on the year. on the petcocks, it depends on the compression, and the condition of the battery, if this is a top mount starter model it is not recomended that you try to start it by hand unless you use the crank center (steering wheel set up) cranking it by turning the flywheel by hand can cause finger loss. also if you found a dip stick, you don't got no A. get the manuals they are a must.
