I have purchased a set of remanufactured woven disc for the JD 5020. I find that the new dics are not much thicker then the ones I have take out. Does any one know the thickness of the pads on the clucth or where to find the information?

If you were having a slippage problem,a new set of discs is not going to cure the problem. The pressure plate will have to be rebuilt with all new springs and hardware. The flywheel will need to be measured for wear and machined back to specs if possible. Get the flywheel specs from JD and have a reputable machine shop check it. The flywheel has to be machined on two surfaces, the face area where the discs ride and the outer ring where the pressure plate bolts to. This has to be done correctly, or you will have continuing clutch problems. Also check the thickness of the intermediate steel disc to see if it is in spec. You will also need the special tool from JD to set the pressure plate finger height, or one can be fabricated using the dimentions in the service manual.

YOU had better read a service manual be for you go to working on 5020 clutch they are different than 4020 I think you compincate wear by change links in the clutch rather than step grinding the flywheel I worked on one that JD dealer had step machined the flywheel and it woundn't work right, Get you a manual and read it before you do anything, they messed up a flywheel learning. 5020 if I remember has two clutch discs and plates that go between them are high dollar to buy. If you have problem finding info [email protected] and I'll try to help the best I can.

The clutch was not actually slipping. The reason I split the tractor was because the throw out bearing was seized and was wearing out the bearing bushing and the bolts on the presure plate fingers. I decided to replace the clutch discs because I have the tractor split. The flywheel, center steel wheel and presure plate all are in good condition; however the clutch disc; of which there are two with pads on both sides; are very thin and close to the rivits. I purchased remanufaqctured dics from the JD dealer but when I compare them to the old disc there is little difference in pad thickness. That is why I was wondering if anyone knew how thick the pads are on each side of the disc. No dealers in the Peace country have clutch dics in stock for me to compare these to.

I am in the process of putting my 5020 back together for a seal replacement. If you are into it that far you might consider replacing the tranny seals. They are around 6.00 ea. Make sure you have a manual handy. I noticed my clutch discs were also not real thick. I had the clutch shop install new rivets. They said the lining was real good quality, is why I used the same discs over again. Mine were not pads. sorry I can't answer your question on thickness
