I help an older fellow in the next town keep all his two cylinder tractors running, ranging from overhauls to minor tune-ups. He had one of his better model A tractors sitting on his ground not far from his house recently when someone swiped the carburetor. He was lucky enough to have an old tractor sitting around that had a carburetor on which I could rebuild so he could use his good tractor--I just hope some shmuck doesn't swipe that one too.

What would you recommend in the way of theft-proof bolts or fasteners to keep the thieves at bay? I was thinking of some sort of bolt head that requires a special wrench to remove, but I have not found anything that will work locally.

Thanks in advance for all your ideas and help.

Find Mcmaster-carr on the Web and search for security nut. They have every fastener and wrench imaginable, along with a lot of items that they are the only source for. If W.W. Grainger don't have it, Mcmaster-Carr will.

Whan you figure out that one, add license plates to the list of items being theived. Some one swiped the plate off wife's car while it was parked at the community college a while back. Probably got 11 months of free driving off'n it.
I used body bolts with TORX heads to put new plates on, but they've started to rust.

The parts store I used to work at had "tamper proof" license plate bolts. They were either torx or allen, I don't remember which, but they had kind of a stud in the center that prohibited use of a regular allen or torx wrench. The wrenches that came with the bolts had holes drilled in them so they would work.

Take care, Fireman

They make special sockets to remove bolts with rounded heads. You could carefully grind or file off the corners of the bolt heads after you put them on and be able to get them off with the special socket.
Or you could use allen head screws and fill the hole with JB Weld after you put them on. Then you could remove them with the same special tool.

PennDOT puts ROAD CLOSED signs up with the sort of thing you're talking about. They use bolts that look sort of like carriage bolts, except (I think) without the square part right behind the head, and (I know) with bumps on the head with sharp stepped edges on one side of the bump and curves on the opposite side of the bump so a regular flat screwdriver could tighten the bolt but not easily loosen it. I suppose a pair of vice grips could get one off, but that would probably be a major pain in the neck for everyone except the thieves. The nuts PennDOT uses on the ROAD CLOSED signs are threaded like regular nuts on the inside, but are smooth cones on the outside so anything could easily slip off. I don't know where you could get either of these though. If I did know, I would probably have bought some, considering the way my CATTLE CROSSING signs disappear.

I'm not sure if these are big enough, but they look like they're probably like what PennDOT uses for their ROAD CLOSED signs.

Now, how do you keep the terrorists from stealing the sediment bowl? (A terrorist stole the sediment bowl off my brother William's International M.)

I bought 3 old tractors out of a barn a few years ago, A john deere, they took the carb off it F12 farmall they took the mag off it and the only 60 sold here in my home town, everybody says those kids need to be shot, but after awhile the truth comes out , it was NOT kids , but grown men who were stealing and tearing up these tractors to better the the price when they went to buy them, whats worse than carbs and mags is serial number tags, it not only drops the value but when you go to order parts you can get close but sometimes can't pinpoint age of tractor. Anybody who will steal someones enjoyment is a Chicken @@@@ and they know it.
