I have read the replies here and thought I should throw this in. The reason the crossover T-stats are smaller MAY be that they are to be installed on the end of the casting where the hose attaches on its way to the radiator. The reason I say this is because that is the way the Ferguson (1954 Continental) engine is meant to be installed. The T-stat is the same diameter as the hose inside diameter and rests against the engine pump casting actually in the hose itself. Make sense? Just something to consider.

Al,
Good luck in finding one. They're not too plentiful. Meantime a piece of green tarp with eyelets on the corners can be bungee corded over the front screen in about 1 minute. And if you're not using your 60 that day you can switch the tarp to another tractor in about 2 minutes.

These shortcuts picked up from Dads and Grand Dads who farmed during the Depression die hard.

Ain't that the truth, Steve?!
I've tried every parts house in the county to try and get it crossed (i.e. Gates/Stant, NAPA, etc.). They all list a cross, but most are WAY to small in diameter - I darn near dropped the first one right into the block!!! The model Stant has actually was the right diameter but the flange was nearly 1/4" thick; there would be no way that I could tighten down the thermostat housing!
And of course 'Ma Deere only wants $105.16 for a new one.
The tarp/cardboard sounds better all the time!
I've got a functioning 160 degree one in there now and it looks like it's going to stay there!

AlbertoV05, if you have a functioning 160 stat in there now it should be adjustable to increase the opening temp. Just put a piece of string in the closed T-stat trap door & hang the t-stat in a pot of water by the string, then while heating the pot on a stove, put a thermometer in the pot [caution: don't set the thermometer on the metal of the pot, or it will give a false reading]& watch the temp that the T-stat falls off the string. Just adjust until you get the opening temp you need. I haven't ever adjusted a 160 stat to 180 but you might get close.

OK, Clooney; I'm asking what is definately the dumbest question you've had today; and probably so far this year!!!
How do you adjust this thermostat to change the opening temp?
Thanks for the help

Al,
There may be a lot of wisdom in the tarp or cardboard. Getting a good result with the least amount of input is what farming is all about anyway.

-- about being a Hawkeye, I don't think Boilermakers like Burrey and Stan will mind a Hawkeye too much. Better not say much about Alford, though - he was an IU Hoosier. Talk about somebody like John Wooden - hall of fame as both a Purdue player, and obviously as a coach. That'll keep 'em happy.

take care,

Steve
