I am considering getting a 430 w. and would like to have power steering. Two questions - If I get one without. First,, how much trouble am i going to have finding parts to put it on ? Second what would be a ballpark figure for the cost? Any information you could give me would be appreciated.

If you want PS, get a tractor with it on. If you are curious as to why borrow a 420 430 parts book and look at the dirrerence between the steering components of the models.

PS would be hard to find, they made 3 different
types of PS for the 420-430 tractors, the late
style worked pretty good.I saw a complete PS
assembly at a swap meet last year, they were
asking $2000.

Thanks for the information. I kind of thought it would be hard to even find a PS unit. When you said the later ones, do you know the serial no break where they were changed and improved. If im going to be picky and wait for one with power steering it just as well be the one that works better. Thanks.,

I havn't heard any pros or cons on the later styled pump being a better or stronger unit than the pre 158075 one. Personally, with my limited knowledge I would try any 430 out with PS and if it worked fine, that would be the determination. Towards the end of 58 deere updated the 420 (which carried thru the 430)powers teering to have a separate pump. You gotta keep a sense of humor about parts, Mr Thinker says the pumps are made out of unobtanium. My late 58 just happens to have the new style pump on it - may have been a replacement 30 years ago.

Lots of things are made of that material. I agree with you that any type of system that is working would serve my purpose. When I get one it won't be used hard but it will be used. Plan to put a mower on it and let my wife mow some areas that we normally don't get mowed. Thanks for the information.

I have a 1959 model 430S with the late PS,all
you need to do is look above the generator at
the PS pump. The late series is like a car pump,
the tank is horizonal with a small dipstick hole
to check the fluid,on the older type the PS pump
was verticle, and you had to take the lid off the
top to check the oil.The first PS units on the
420'S used the tractor hydraulic pump for pressure, haven't seen that type on a 430 though.

The lastest version on the 430H,S,T,U and W was Serial #158075 and up.
