I got my 730 dsl running yesterday. It hasn't ran in atleast 5 years that I know of. The engine has been gone through, the pump and injectors have been gone through and I went through the transfer pump and replaced the seals. My problem is fuel pressure. I am checking the pressure at the second stage filter. I have a 0-60 pound liquid filled pressure gauge. And I can't get but maybe 1 or 2 pounds of fuel pressure out of it. I've tried shimming the transfer pump, but it doesn't seem to help. I've took the return line off and all I get out of it is foam. I put my finger over it and it still wouldn't build any fuel pressure. I did this with and without the shims in the transfer pump. Is my transfer pump bad? It sounds like it. Or is there something else I could do for it? The little pump didn't look bad. Any help would be appreciated.

JASON SOUNDS LIKE YOU ARE SUCKING AIR . I NEVER HAD MUCH LUCK REPLACEING SEALS ON THE TRANSFER PUMPS, THEY ALL DID WHAT YOURS IS DOING. BY THE WAY THAT 730 SHOULD HAVE A HIGH PRESSURE SYSTEM AND THATS 65 PSI AT THE SECOND FILTER . CHECK THE RELIEF VALVE ON THE RETURN LINE . HOPE THIS HELPS DON

DON; I show the 720 through the 1960 730 using the same transfer pump. It shows the 1961 730 using the later pump. If the same pump is used with the same internal parts how could the pressure be higher?

Jason, that is kind of common on transfer pumps with wear on them. You will find the more you shim them the less pressure you get. The problem lies in the pump design & wear between the piston & pump bore. What happens is with a little piston to bore wear, if you shim the spring, the pump cant make enough pressure to depress the piston far enough to close the by-pass port & it just flat wont make any pressure. [it stays in the free flow by-pass position all the time]. What you need is a new slightly larger piston, the only problem is the replacement from Deere is [or at least was the last time I bought one] smaller in outside diameter than the one you have in it now. On the last few I have done I had to make a new piston in my lathe that was about .003-.004 larger than the old piston. ~Even when everything is sized correctly I sometimes have trouble getting over 12-15 lbs of pressure on a hot fuel hot engine system.
~My suggestion is to back off on the spring shim(s) until you start to make pressure then see what you end up with. If you can get over 10 lbs of pressure just live with it. If you cant, you will need to find or make a larger diameter piston. Im sorry I dont have any pistons sizes to give you as I am not near my shop right now. If you have a means of micing your old piston E-Mail me & when Im in my shop I will see if I can give you the piston size I used on the last piston I made.
~That gauge you are using is probably not what you should be using. The resolution on a 0-60 psi gauge probably isn't what you want for that low pressure pump [I use a calibrated 0-25 psi gauge]...

Thanks for the info. I'll see if I can't find another gauge. It will probably be this weekend before I can get you a measurement. Thanks again.
