A Gear Shift Question

Hi All,

My thoughts, prayers, and sympathies to all the families affected by the Columbia tragedy!

I've got an "A" I'm working on - it is about 528780 serial #.

It has a 6 speed transmission according to the gear shift lever guide.

My question is - did some of those tractors come with a shifting position in the shifting guide where the gear shift lever is for 5 and 6, but there actually was no gear there??

You can feel the gears shifting normally for 1-4 and reverse, but nothing happening at all on 5-6.

I pulled the top off expecting to find broken teeth everywhere or a broken shifting collar or something like that. But there seems to be nothing broken or even worn inside the transmission!

Everything looks brand new, except there just is no shifting fork to catch the lever for 5 and 6...

Feel free to ask questions if I'm not explaining this well...

Thanks in advance,
Howard Henderson

Your tractor is a war tractor and was originally shipped on steel wheels. 5th and 6th are too fast for steel wheels. So Deere left those 2 gears out of the trans. Your 5th and 6th gear would be behind a cover on the left hand side, behind the flywheel. I have 2 war tractors, an A and B. Enjoy her.
