i have a 39 that came set up that way. the 12 on the left and 16 on the right. the 16 spoke rim was a replacement wheel made by deere through the mid 40's for older tractors. your 44 did not come from the factory that way. those rims were put on there after the tractor was new. there are 4 types of rims that were available from the factory. the pressed steel and cast center for rubber and the standard and skeleton steel wheels. the only b's equiped with spoke rubber from the factory were 39's and som 40's. all others after that had pressed or cast rims. as fro the spoke rims. the 39's came with 12 spoke cast-in hubs not 16 spoke wheels. those are for an a. i spent a ton of time finding out what wheels went where etc for my 39 and i replaced the 16 spoke i had for a 12. i have had 2 44's and they both had pressed rims. hope this helps you out.

during the war deere dealers got what they could get from the factory. many wartime b's were given two options...steel w/ electric starting and lights or hand crank and rubber wheels. your tractor was most likely shipped on steel and when the war ended the owner wanted rubber. the dealer might have only had replacement rims that were spokes....the owner might have taken what he could get...if you've driven steel you know what i mean

Ed, a few years ago a friend bought a 1939 B with THE EXACT SAME SET UP, a 12 spoker on 1 wheel and a 16 on the other. A friend on here (may have been Rummys though???) and I did some research and exchanged several e mails, and though I lost those old e mails and the research in a computer crash, heres what I recall and remember, lol Ive slept plenty since then. Seems like one was an A wheel (16 spoke) and the other a B (12 spoke) and some old timers shared how when the right furrow wheel broke sometimes when plowing, it was replaced by the stronger 16 spoker on that side. I forget if we only found antecdotal evidence or any real JD literature, but thats what I recall. Is yours the 16 on right and 12 left??? I dont have any parts book to show if those part numbers match the models A & B, that info may help figure the question out. Good Luck and God Bless America, Ol John T Nordhoff in Indiana

john t my parts book shows that the 16 flat spoke rim #jd1270r is the correct one and looking at the picture in the book there are 16 spokes also the # that is on the rim says its for tractors from b60000 thru b183788 my tractors # is 151572 the parts book also shows a 12 flat spoke rim part # ab1316r but this rim is according to the book only for a bnh or a bwh only and the part # on my 12 spoke is 1259r which is not in the b parts book any help is appreiciated because this is driving me nuts thanks ed b ps best wishes 2 your son
