I finally got my B to spark after I cleaned the points. Now it starts but when I put a load on it it spits y sputters. I tried adjusting the gas mixtures and it helps a little but I have no power when i try to use it. I was wondering if the timming would cause this? I have a distributor from a 60 on it and i was wondering how can i time it with a light?

Charlie, Yes you could use a timing light, but if cleaning the points helped it, they may simply need replaced, because if the silver coatign was removed during cleaning, they never are quite as good. I guess you re gapped them at 0.020 to 0.022 or so???

Even without a timing light, does movement of the distributor to advance or retard the ignition make much difference in its performance??

When it spits n sputters, is it black smoking out the exhaust?? Does it run any better if you use the choke a bit???

The reasons for these questions are to determine if its a fuel or ignition problem. If adjustign the load needle on the carb or using some choke dont matter much, the problem could be ignition and I would first examine and clean or replace the plugs, be sure the wires are good and wire, not carbon, try a new set of points, time it as much as possible (advance or retard) even without the worry of a timing light, and then describe what happens. Good Luck PS Thanks again to all for the support and prayers for our service men, I just returned home, and as typical for the military lol my sons deployment was delayed until Feb 9 to 13?? Charlie, sure you can but you will have to run it with the flywheel cover taken off, that will require a strap or bungee to hold the starter rod up so the starter dis-engages while running.... Use a tape measure & measure the circumference of the flywheel [the actual flywheel, not the ring gear],,,then divide the number by 360, that will give you the inches per degree,,, then multiply that number by 25, 30, or 35 [the degrees you want to run, 30 would be a good start],,,then measure that amount [probably between 3.5"-5.5"] in the advanced direction from the L/H impulse mark on the flywheel & put a paint mark on the flywheel ,,,then hook your light to the L/H plug wire [on some timing lights you will need to use a piece of resistor plug wire to get the light to trigger correctly],,, then hook the light power cord to a proper power source & run the engine at wide open throttle,,, then shine the light at the flywheel to case mark [behind the flywheel at 3 o'clock & at the same height as the crank center & turn the distributor until the marks line up. With this method you will also be able to watch the distributor advance work & advance the timing as the engine is sped up.
~You have another alternative & that is to use a timing light with an adjustable advance delay built in & set the light at 30, the only problem with that is with the spark appearing at each TDC you will have to lie to the light about the firing pulses if it's programmable on the light used.
~If you don't want to figure the advance inches, just measure the flywheel circumference & either post it or E-Mail it with the degrees of advance you want to run & I will send you the inches of advance you need.
~On the carb setting...start with the load needle at 1 turn out from seated & the idle needle at 2 turns out from seated to see if that helps.
