I have a 1968 gas 3020 with syncro-range trans that doesn't always go into gear. Some times when shifting from 1st to reverse it doesn't go into gear and I move back to another gear then back to reverse then it will go in. It will do this from reverse to 3rd. Is there some type of adjustment I can make? I do have the books but can't seem to find anything on adjusting the gears. Can anyone help??

The rods from the shift quadrant down to the arms on the side of the transmission can be lenthened or shortend by turning a clevis under the dash. When linkage wears somtimes you go past the gear so,when you go into reverse don't yank back so hard try to feel the detent position of the gear.
Another thing to look at is is how loose are the shift drums on the shaft ander the dash, can you push the halfs together and get another thin washer under the snap ring to limit side play. There are fiber washers and a pivot block in that
shift drum that wear to. Worn and poorly ajusted linkage is often mistaken for bad syncronysers.

look down on the right side of the tranny. There is two shift rods which goes into the tranny. Try to slide them in and out. There should be very little play, not more than a 32nd. If to great loosen the arms and tap in so they will take out the slack. You have to cock the arms and hold the tension on them while you tap the shaft. Not real hard. This will cause the shaft to move outward and remove the slack. It really sounds as if the Syncro's are worn out of the tranny.

Thanks for the info. I checked the side play and there is very little movement. I will take the dash cover off and check there also. Thanks again!!
