Today I put a head gasket on my 730 diesel. I put it all together and started it after much turning. I heated it up and shut it back off to retorque the head bolts. After putting the rocker assembly on the second time I must have missed what would be lifters on any other engine but a JD. I turned it over, it was like the decompression was on. I realized my mistake. I pulled the rockers back off. I tried to pull the pushrods out, but the two that were off will not come off they are the center two, being the intake valves. How do I get them out, and have i messed up the whatever JD calls lifters, and or my pushrods. Just hoping i dont have to pull the head or block off.

Will, I don't know what you have there. Try pulling the compression release while pulling on the pushrods to see if they will come loose. Does moving the flywheel while pulling on the pushrods help? Can you feel the pushrods move a little while turning the flywheel a little? If they won't come loose they must be jammed on something like the compression release or beside the lifters. You might try clamping a pair of vice grips on the pushrods to see if you can pull them out with force.

I don't think the compression shaft is involved, but that's a guess without seeing it first hand. The compression release shaft just has half-moon recesses in it that push the backside of the half-dollar sized skirts of the lifters forward the .080" or so to relieve the pressure.

I think the pushrod(s) might be jammed beside, or rather, under, the front lip of one or more of the followers/lifters. I just didn't think that there was room for that to happen, though.

I think I'd try to get a better look at it from above, by removing the pump cover off of the top of the block. I think you'll see that the push rod(s) might be pinched under the bottom lip of the two lifters. If they're pinched, you MIGHT be able to give the lifter a rap backward with a piece of brass, provided that you can safely determine that the lifter is sitting off the cam.

Now, that's not saying that you still didn't bend/break something pretty important in the process !

Hope you find it !

Clooney, thanks for the prompt reply. I did try turning the flywheel both directions with no movement at all in the pushrods. I have not tried the compression release, but I will. I almost tried the vise grips earlier, but I was afraid of pulling somthing out that was'nt supossed to come out. I am still afraid of the outcome. I won't be able to work on it anymore this week, because I have to return to school. I may come home next weekend just to work on it. I will post then. Ill have to go the farm machinery show in Louisville 2 weekends from now.

I got to work on it after church today. My dad went with me. He just walked up and pulled one of the pushrods out. We put the vise-grips on the other, and beat the snot out of it. It finally came out. He used a flat file to smooth the sides back out. We took the fuel cover off so we could see that the rods were going in the right direction this time. We put the rocker asembly on and started it up. Everything sounded very normal, and it ran fine. My only problem now is that the botom water pipe leaks like a sieve. I can see that it is crooked too far to be touching the O-ring on the waterpump end of the pipe. Is there some trick to put the thing back on, or am I not holding my mouth right?

Oh Will,

I spent the better part of a day getting each end of both the upper and lower new pipes installed in my 70. I used new o-rings, some vaseline, tried dish soap, etc. The process that finally worked for me was to slice strips from a lacquer thinner can 'bout an inch wide, and 3-4 inches long, and file off the burrs. I laid them lengthwise along the pipe end (in fact I bent the end over the end of the pipe to hold them in place). They kept the o-ring in place, and formed a ramp as the pipe was twisted back and forth and pressed inward. Get some extra o-rings....you'll probably slice one or two, and extras are cheaper than running back into town.

Hey ! Good deal on the pushrods...no telling how they were stuck.

sounds like a good idea. Did you just take pliers and pull the tin out?

Yep !

Just grabbed them with a pliers and pulled them out. Any lube in there will help them slide out, and help the o-ring seal well.
