I converted my 620 to 12v negative ground in 1997 using Denny's Carb Shop electronic ignition, 55,000 Volt coil and one-wire alternator. I believe the E.I. unit is still $69 but did not include the coil. It is well worth the money. The installation directions were included from Denny's and were easy to follow.

Chris,
Not sure how cheap you mean by cheap. The Genesee site is linked from this site and they offer a kit for a JD 60 with Delco for $92.50. You have to really hate changing - or go through lots of points and condensor sets before you break even. You'll also need to swap from positive to negative ground to use these things. And like Clooney said, you won't take full advantage of it until you install a coil with more power. I doubt your auto parts store carries a lot of stuff for two cylinder engines, so you'd have to do some juggling to fire at the right time with a converted 4 or 8 cyl electronic ignition. -- couple of reasons my 60 still has points and a condensor.

Chris, I can't help you on where to get those E.I. kits. One thing to keep in mind when shopping price is the cheaper units probably won't include an ignition coil & a new high output ign coil is where most of the ignition performance gain is obtained with an E.I. unit.

I ordered a 6 volt positive ground module directly through Pertronix (call their 800 number found at www.pertronix.com and they will tell you the nearest place to order it from). All they need is the number off the Delco-Remy tag. You don't have to change from pos to neg ground if you get the correct module.

Although I am still using the stock coil, the biggest benefit was in not having to constantly clean, file, replace points (I use my 420 infrequently). It also starts MUCH better than it ever did with points.
