Recently bought a Brantley back hoe attachment with some other tractor equipment. The hoe's manual says it's for a JD 400. I'm a Farmall guy (sorry fellas!) and don't know much about the JD400. Can someone steer me to a site where I can learn more? I'd like to adapt it to a piece of my equipment maybe.

Thanks

Brantley made a backhoe for a JD 400 Garden tractor you probally have a somewhat rare peice to the right collector. Here is a web site that might help you www.weekendfreedommachines.com

...Just a note of caution...400's have closed center hydraulic systems....If its installed on an open center system, something will "give"....and the weakest link is usually the pump housing !!!

Brandon is right too. Actually I used the wrong nomenclature, the JD 400 that came to my mind first is more of a lawn & garden tractor than compact utility. But, there sure is a much bigger heavier yellow version too.

The JD400 is basically a 2020 with minor changes. It is the industrial version of the 2020. I have a website about the JD industrial tractors, but I haven't made a page about the JD400 just yet, sorry!

the 400 is 62 hp i believe that a 2020 is 54..the 400 has a 219 engine and was built between 1975 and 1985.. i believe it would match up closer to a 2030 with exception of having heavier front axles..have nice day may god bless

I could be wrong, and would be glad to be corrected, but the JD400 is a 2020, and the JD401 is a 2030.

I just looked at the parts books for all four tractors (although definitely not part by part!)

The 2020 and JD400 were made from 1965-1971
The 2030 and JD401 were started in 1971 or 1972

I tried to compare engine blocks, but it got pretty confusing, because some books listed the orignal numbers, while others (later versions) were full of "replacement short block" numbers. I'm still pretty certain that the JD400 had the 2020 engine, and JD401 had the 2030. Also, there is the fact that the JD400 had a 2020 style serial number tag.

I won't blame anybody if they are confused after reading all that. I think I am!

i have a 401B that you compared to a 2020 in another decussion..i think that i told you it compared to a 2440...i just looked at jd parts on the net both 400 and 401 401b used the 219 engine, the 2020 we have is 202 cu in..the industrial 400 and up cannot becompared to a 2020..the frontends are so much heavier ..check it out on jd parts..have nice day may god bless

Hey again,

The JD400 used a 202 cube diesel, take a look at this page from the JD400 parts book:

JDparts probably just lists the REPLACEMENT engine, and not the original. Yes, the JD400 has a heavier front end than the 2020, but that is why it is the industrial version.

Yes, I think I compared the JD401B and the 2020 at one time, but I really meant the tractor's size, because I didn't know which later model that the JD401B was based on. I guess I shouldn't have done that, I'm sorry.
