Deere specifies that rod bolts are only good for one torque application. If I were to use plasi-gauge to get the rod bearing clearance, would I have to get new bolts or would it be acceptable to remove bearing cap, use the plasti-gauge, re-torque and when all is said and done use new bolts with the new inserts?( this is on a 300 series diesel)many thanks

"Deere specifies that rod bolts are only good for one torque application."

That might be the exact text but the meaning is use new bolts for every engine build. Which also means it's OK to use the old bolts at full torque to check clearances with plastigauge. What they don't want is old bolts that may have developed weaknesses to be running in a new engine.

You don't have to torque the bolts to their final torque when using the plastigage...just use the old ones and tighten...Once the rod cap is against the connecting rod, and the plastigage is compressed, the cap doesnt compress any "closer" to the connecting rod with added tightening of the bolt...The torque setting just tightens the bolt to the maximum clamping force that that particular size bolt can withstand...
So tighten by feel with the old bolts....measure the plastigage ....and when all checks out ok, install the new bolts and tighten away !!!
