I have a 1948 John Deere D and it has a Wico C mag and for some reason when it is runing at a low idle it only hits on one. Also when we are going up a steep hill it tends to have a lack of power and only hits on one. Although when it is just running at a medium idle it will run just fine except when it is cold outside. Could this also be caused by the fact that we got it unstuck with out having to take it apart and the one or two of the rings might be stuck. Thanks for any Help you can give!

Austin, start with both a cold & hot compression test. If there is a problem there look for leaking valves, worn rings, or pitted cylinder bore.

~If the compression test is acceptable then install new spark plugs & look for bad plug wires, incorrect carbon core plug wires [the plug wires MUST be solid steel or copper core & NOT auto TVRS carbon core], or cracked mag cap. If the plugs & wires are ok, the compression is good, the mag cap is good, then look for worn throttle plate in the carb, worn throttle shaft bushings or partially plugged idle passages in the carb, [does it run better with the choke partially on?]

~If all above are good & it still runs bad, suspect worn intake valve guides, a leaking intake manifold gasket, or an internal mag problem.

Austin, at very low RPM's many 2 cyliner Deeres with single barrell carburetors hit stronger on the left than right cylinders. Thats because left fires, then only 180 degrees later 2 fires, and then theres that long 540 degree coast cycle in which residual vacuum and fuel in the carb and manifold can collect a good fuel charge, so when left intake valve opens to draw in fuel, it gets a healthy charge, while right cylinder doesnt have that advantage. Still, I would check the plugs and wires and cap and rotor and do some rotation and swapping in case one of the plugs or wires is also contributing to the problem. The mag uses the same points, condensor, and coil to fire either side, so if one side has a better spark, its likely a wire or plug or cap or rotor related problem. You might re gap the points to 0.017 just in case the mags rotor bearings or one of the cam lobes is wore some and see if that helps. Good luck, Ol John T Nordhoff in Indiana

You should check the valves if they are ok. But I think plugs wires points is where I would start. The rings I would not loose sleep over unless the plugs foul out.
