My son was running my 4020 picking corn and he didn't relize that he was leaking transmission oil out. Finnally when he noticed it all of the oil was just about gone. He stopped the tractor and filled up the trans oil but 3rd 5th and 8th gear wouldn't work and grumbles in everyother gear along with the 3pt working when it wants to. the tranmission is a snychro and i have since parked it in the shed trying to decide what to do with it. What do you think is wrong with it and how much do you think it would cost to fix it. the tractor has about 10000 hours and needs to be overhauled is it cost effective to fix my old green machine. THanks in advance

A very similar disaster struck my father's 4010 some years ago. The tranny has sliding gears and clutches detente springs all on the top shaft alone. Lack of oil wreaks havoc here. You can usually dress the shaft, replace the clutches and sometimes dress the inside of the gears and reuse most parts, but you need a cone to load the sliding collar with the springs and balls. I have taken a shop manual and rebuilt a 4010 and a 4040, however you have to pull the tractor apart, and it is complex.

I sure wish I knew of this board before I started on my 4010 In hind site I would have "junked" it instead of rebuilding it. I now have a "good" 4010 that is only worth about 1/3 of what I have in it. And I can tell you that you "don't" want to get in to the trany with out all the special tools made for that job. I am ashamed to admit how much I have in it.

you haveprobably gaulded the main trans shaft, and maybe the trans hyd pump.there is a possibility that the mainshaft could be taken out and polished, the pump would need to be replaced.if you have it repaired it will be pretty pricey.if you can do it yourself,i would go for it.
