Do I have a fuel problem with the '51 JD A?

After the temperatures took a dive, my '51 JD A doesn't hold a steady speed. No matter where I have the throttle, it will slow down till it almost dies, then rev up to the throttle position and back down, dying occasionally, even with a load. I've been trying to adjust the carburator with no luck. The fuel is OK, I've used it in other engines. Fuel filter? Air Filter? Something with the carb?

I suspect carburator icing, if so then you should notice frost on the intake manifold just downstream of the carburator. Water in air cleaner oil will contribute to this problem, but not much one can do about it other than change air cleaner oil. Preheating intake air is standard solution for cars but hard to arrange that on these tractors.

You also may have some water in the bottom of the carb - drain your carb bowl into a can and see if you can spot it. Gasline antifreeze (HEET, etc.) would pick up some of it. Condensation in your A's tank would create it even if the fuel started out good and clean.

Is there a possibilty your carburetor is frosting? A 2 Cylinder JD will run erratically on a cold damp day, when the carburetor frosts up. You can see the frost on the carburetor when this happens.

Nick, first thing, check the air cleaner cup for water [or ice]. If that is ok check the mag/distributor cap for moisture in it. Then try re-setting the carb back to a basic setting of: idle needle = 2 turns out from seated & load needle = 1 turn out from seated. If you still have speed stability problems try running with the choke at different on positions & if that makes a difference suspect a plugged carb internal passage
