Dear se, Ive had several 720 pony starts and used Bens 820 and heres what I recommend. I turn the fuel on, turn on switch, set the pony throttle to start, crank her and choke as needed, then ..... ..... ... let her warm up a decent time to dry out moisture and carbon and let the diesel head etc warm up a bit, then set the pony throttle to run and let her rev and warm up more, then pull back the compression release full, then pull back the engaging clutch back and let her spin to loosen thigns up a bit, and then dump the comprerssion and let her crank till the big girl fires. I ALWAYS PULL THE COMPRESSION LEVER BACK WHEN IM SHUTTING DOWN THE DIESEL ALSO, TO REDUCE STRESS ON THE CRANKSHAFT TO FLYWHEEL. Then, I set the pony throttle back to idle and let her cool down a bit and shut off the fuel and then turn off the switch. Ol John T Nordhoff

Only thing I could add to that is so common sense that it was left out. Leave the throttle on the shut off position until after compression has been restored. Compression is not restored until after oil pressure appears. Should have seen the wife's cousins hacking away on their starting engine equiped 730. They had no manual/books etc. They shut it off by stalling it or pulling the compresison release. Should have seen the suprised looks when I pulled the stop-knob and the throttle all the way back.
