When pulling the cover off from behind the flywheel, the 1st and 3rd gear shaft came out a ways and will not go back in all the way. What does the end of that shaft ride in, and do I have to open the top of the trans to get the shaft back in all the way.

Scott, I did the same thing on my 720 a fews week ago. If you are talking about the shaft with the shifting fork on it,Go to the right side of the tractor and you will see a jam bolt in a nut that is recesed in the trans housing just take it, the jam bolt and nut off/out, and in their is a spring and a plunger, remove them, then you slide your shaft back in and reinstall the plunger and spring, If you can't hit the hole for the shaft you will have to take the shifting cover off so you can see what you are doing, Good Luck, Ben,

Yes,Ben that is the shaft I'm talking about with the shifting fork on it. It will be a while before I get back to the shop to work on it. So there is nothing that should have come apart inside? Just need to get the end of the shaft to line back up with the hole? Thanks for your reply.

Yeah. I pulled on the shaft to far and it came out. You may have to use a maganet to get the spring and plunger out of the hole....After you get the shaft back in the plunger go in the notch in the shaft.I had to replace the whole tran on my 720, It is not a fun job for someone like me who has never done a trans job before,,,But their are some good people on this site that will walk you throught it,, Good luck Ben

Scott, if you are talking about the top shaft, you either pulled the shaft through the L/H bearing & dislodged the snap ring inside the trans that holds the bearing on the shaft, or pulled the shaft out bearing & all. If you pulled the bearing out of the case it will be evident as the oil retainer & snap ring will be out of position. If you pulled the shaft through the bearing you will have to open the case up to repair & reinstall that snap ring.

~If it's the bottom shaft that came out you probably pulled the L/H bearing retaining snap ring from the case groove but should still open the trans up to see if you also pulled the snap ring loose that holds the cluster gear retainer on.
