Dear MD, like Clooney and Lee were talking, you might be able maybe to tell if just the fan blade will turn free (cheaper fix) or it feels like the blade is turning a heavier shaft. Does the fan blade feel loose or wobble on its axis ?? (bad fan drive) Or does it feel tight and solid more like a heavier shaft is turning?? (maybe expensive governor or gears problem). If the entire fan shaft assembly can be pulled enough forward horizintal out of the governor without fan getting into radiator etc., you might be able to see if turning the blade is turning the shaft. Does it run ok but the fan doesnt turn ever??? Let us all know. Ol John T

MDM, it depends on why the fan is turning free? If the fan shaft is not turning free but the fan blade is, the fan friction clutch is slipping or worn out as Lee suggested. If the fan blade AND the fan shaft are turning free together you are looking at worn out fan drive gears or internal governor problems. ~If the problem is just the fan friction clutch slipping it isn't a big deal, but if the problem is in the fan gears or governor it is a big job that could get rather expensive.

There is a clutch pack with friction disks on either side of the fan proper that are spring loaded that allows the fan some slippage. Yours are plum wore out! Actually the zinc plates that form the drive plates have 'frozen' themselves to the fan shaft such that the spring doesn't push them together and grip the fan any more. I replaced mine last summer with same symptom. $13 for each zinc plate and $5 for the friction disks for about $40 total. Sure cools better when that fan turns!
