I have a set of pistons which have too much clearance in the piston ring grooves. Considering the cost of a new set of pistons I was wondering if these pistons could be reworked and used again. Otherwise the pistons look good..no scores, cracks, scuffs etc. Thanks.

I recently had the top two ring grooves in both of my D pistons turned by a machine shop. I was charged $40.00 for the entire job. They squared up the top of the grooves since they were wore taper, and took the cut downward. This way the wider rings would not run higher than the original wear. I then put two 5/16" gapless rings in the top grooves and left 1/4" rings in the bottom. I was pleased with the price and results.

AWB, you didn't give the tractor or piston type? ~As a rule you can chuck the pistons up in a lathe & widen the ring grooves & either go to a ring spacer, wider ring, or 2 thinner rings... It depends on the wear, if the lands are solid, & if the grooves can be cleaned up without going too wide. If done correctly the repair will last a long time..... .
