Hello everyone,

My father in law is a farmer out in ND and owns a 420C (tracked crawler) that I am considering purchasing from him. Not knowing what to offer him (I would like to be fair), and not knowing much about John Deere Tractor value I figured I would start here.

It is in great running condition and has been in the family since it was purchased from the dealership. The tin will probably need to be replaced (I'm assuming regualar 420 tin will work on it).

Thanks in advance.

I have a 40C and A 420C and I would go for it in a heartbeat, especially since you know its background. They do have a lot of moving parts, but the best part is that they are small enough that you can work on them without expensive hoists. Parts are available, (see Lavoy's site and others). Track condition is important, but if you aren't going to run it around in the woods, you can get by with some pretty bad tracks. My 40C, I have had for thirty years and the tracks are real bad, but in even soil without a lot of rocks, it works OK. I welded the pads to the chains because the bolts and holes were all worn and took out a link or two to tighten them up and they still work. The critical rolls are the front and back. The ones in the middle can be less than perfect and still be usable. Lavoy has rolls. Engine and most tin parts are the same as any 420 of the same vintage. The clutches and brakes need to be nearly right, but even then you can do this yourself. Again See Lavoy for parts. The best part is running them. I have put thousands of hours on my 40C and it is good therapy after a hard days work because it requires you complete attention, it takes you mind off you troubles. Go for it!!!

P.S. The most important thing is to know your machine and what is right and what is not quite perfect and don't get into trouble because you were abusing a weak area. Also keep the bolts tight so that you are not puttin undue stress where it is not supposed to be. Good Luck

AIM, a lot depends on condition as Gordon said. Am assuming it has a blade. Crawlers are very labor intensive, but they made a lot of them (420's), so parts and aftermarket parts are available.(on this and other sites) How far will you have to haul it? If it has sentimental value, getit, fix it, save it! In the condition you describe, it should be worth $2000 to $3000. My 2 cents worth. Pat

Are you going to use it? The tracks and under carriage is good you can spend about 1500-2000 on just one track One used roller cost me abuot 150-200 That was 10 years ago.Sheet metal is a small fortune. That is not counting steering clutchies, main clutch, trans and engine.I was very fortunate somebody wanted it I might have gotten the parts out but not labor.Do not buy unless you are sure and really want it.
