Frank....saw your response to my post a couple pages back. When you removed your pump, did you have any problems reconnecting the back end of the pump shaft to the coupling on the end of the fan shaft (inside the tube)? I've heard stories about this being a problem as the shaft and coupling will not stay in the center of the tube. Later.

Any chance a loose bit of something went through the pumps and sheared the key? I hear you F.I.T about the paint and thinking the task as complete. Have to pull the hood, nose cone, govenor cover, transmission top and the rockshaft valveing off the 435 to chase some gremlins.

GTaylor...that's a very strong possibility as the previous week when I was using the tractor I lost complete control of the steering. The steering wheel would spin 360 degrees with zero movement of the front wheels. When I pulled the power steering assembly off of the pedastal, the worm gear would not turn when a load was applied to it even though the coupling where the steering shaft attachs was turning. I assume a pin or set screw got loose somewhere in the assembly (haven't dissassembled yet) I put another p/s asssmbly on and it worked for about a week. With the cold temp and viscosity of the p/s fluid this part might have started "floating" in the system and found it's way to the gears. Later

Frank, Chris....thanks for the insight. When you removed the pump was the fan blade still attached to the long end of the shaft? Also, what did you need to "loosen" to get the radiator to tilt forward. Just looking for shortcuts. Thanks!

Blk:

Yes, I removed the pump/fan as a unit. I removed the upper and lower radiator pipes, generator and bracket, aircleaner (infact I removed the entire casting that is bolted to the radiator, so that I could disconnect the air intake hose), P/S suction pipe, P/S pressure hose, fan support (under pump), loosened fan shroud, and the two large radiator bolts underneath. Than I jiggled the radiator forward (seemed as though it would only go about 1 1/2" before it bumps the P/S actuator sleeve housing). I stopped there because I didn't want to disturb the then non-leaking P/S pedestal (now it's scattered all over my garage !)

If you want to remove the actuator housing, it will move forward a bit more, but you could also just lift the radiator out then !

Frank....Thanks! That's kind of what I thought. It seems like a lot of work to replace an itsy bitsy 25 cent woodruff key, doesn't it???? That's what makes it fun(?)!!!!! Later.

Blk:

List of 70D things where the part is cheap, but a ton of work to install:

1: Pow-R-Trol cylinder gasket

2: P/S Pump Woodruff key/oil seals

3: Fiber thrust washers on the crank

4: PTO Inner oil seal

5: Removing the platform screws !!!!! !!!!!

6: Replacing Pony motor transmission brake pad

and last, but not least...

7: Replacing the lower o-ring in the P/S pedestal !!!!! !!!!! !!!!! !

Did ya notice that I did them all in the past year (and half of them after finish paint !?!)

Good yuck, err...luck !

Bruce:

I didn't have any problems at all, and yes, I was worried based on the reports I had heard. I think mine didn't have much spline and collar wear, so the shaft didn't hang downward too very much. I just felt the pump shaft onto it, and it joined right up.

Once again i know i am not who your asking for but the 3 times ive had my pump out and yes i am embarassed to say 3. I have never had trouble i always hold that shaft back with a screwdriver or something so that it will stay in the rear coupling. And the first time i did have it out i did get it out of that coupling but it went right back in. Thanks
