I would like to post a picture on this board, but need some expertise/help. I have the picture filed and am familiar with FTP and have a site to post the file on. From their I am lost. I would like to be able to put a link on the board that would result in the file/picture loading when someone clicks on the link. If it is not a lengthy process, I would appreciate it if someone would give me some pointers. I have spent some time in the help files and don't have it yet. Thanx.

Henry J,

F-I-T was most generous with his time and patient with my ignorance in getting me to the point of posting a picture on this board. I can say I actually did it, with his unselfish help. You're 90% of the way there and the rest is the easiest part.

I do have one question for F-I-T though, in your reply to Henry J you say, "Under the Address (URL), drag accross all that info to get the complete address of the picture's location onto your computer's clipboard". I don't know what you mean by "computer's clipboard". When I brought up that long URL I wrote it down longhand and then had to type it all in, both to post to this board and to get a picture posted in an ebay auction. Your way would be much simpler, if I can figure out what's going on.

Jim,

Clipboard is a just a name for short term memory in RAM. In different contexts it's also called scratch pad memory, buffer, and so on.

If you've gotten to the part where you right click to get properties, and see the>Link

The above assumes you're using a Windows machine. With a Mac or a Win machine with Office you can sometimes highlight, hold the left button, and drag text or pictures between applications.

hope this gets you started...

PFJ:

Steve's exactly right. The only thing I would add to make it completely clear is that you would "hold down the left mouse button" as you stroke across the address, which will highlight it. Then right click, select copy, etc.

Sometimes if I have to make a posting like the one to Henry J above, I'll copy/paste all the different URL's and links and stuff at the bottom of my text that I'm writing, using notepad or Word (or any word processor). Then I can left button, stroke over the whole shebang, copy, and paste it into the text area of the message I'm getting ready to post. Then I can cut out the URL's, links, and titles, paste them into the correct blocks, and then add my name and subject, and she be done ! Speeds things up quite a bit.

Steve and Frank,

Thanks for the replies, I'm printing them out for reference. All this stuff is just excruciatingly difficult for me to grasp. So far, cut, paste, and copy are just foreign words that I've heard; but had no idea what they were or did. You've given me something to go on now, as I want to put more stuff on ebay.

Jim,
Maybe the guys at Microsoft and Apple were too clever by half when they used words like cut and paste hoping to conjure up thoughts of what you used to do in kindergarten with scissors and glue. Maybe if you use words like - save this and spit it out here - things will go easier.

If you put pictures on ebay, you're going to need a place on the web to hold the picture. I don't suppose it's kosher to put pictures on the ytmag.com picture galleries and then link them to ebay -- possible, but they probably wouldn't appreciate it. So, you might check out a link a guy just posted over on the Farmall board for free to cheap web hosting.

best wishes in becoming an ebay tycoon.

Steve, you're right about the nomenclature, everything isn't readily apparent as to meaning. My main problem is trying to follow a sequence that isn't properly explained. They assume you know the jargon or some natural order of what to do next, and for a beginning illiterate it is not easy. If you read my first post again you'll see where I have posted a picture here and have posted a picture to an ebay auction, I just had to do it all "longhand". I have AOL so I have a free web site to host (see, I'm learning the jargon) my pictures to, so I can have a URL assigned to them. I won't be an ebay tycoon, but I do have a lot of tractor and car "stuff" to get rid of.

Jim,
Don't let the names throw you. There's more than a little truth to the claim that doctors, lawyers and C++ programmers protect their income by dressing up fairly simple concepts in fancy names. As for the progression of steps in copy / paste - just think of what you'd need to do next to suck up something then spit it back out again - a coarse, but sort of apt comparison.

Sorry, didn't catch the fact you had AOL. Let's see - with seven screen names now and about 2 megs per name - you have 14 megs of web space. If your pictures are only 100 to 200K each - that's at least 70 pictures! You can be a tycoon! Least you'll have cash in you pocket instead of stuff lying around out back.
..good luck..
Steve

Henry J:

I'm by no means an expert, but I'll be happy to offer a few tips.

First try and get a picture to post into your message.

Right click on your picture from the site on the web where it stored, and select "properties".

Under the Address: (URL), drag across all that info to get the complete address of the picture's location onto your computer clipboard.

The adress will look something like this: http://www.tractorshed.com/gallery/tphotos/a9335.jpg

Place this info below in the message block where it says :Optional Image URL:

When your message is viewed by other folks, they will also see your picture based on the address.

Now, to place a link in there, it's pretty mnuch the same, with one additional step. Put your webpage address in the "Optional Link URL". Then you have to put some title in the link title block so it knows how to display the hyperlink in your message.

My example will show (hopefully), a picture of my '70'. The image is in the YT tractor shed. Then a link to my very simple webpage that I have in my free area in AO
L.

Hope this helps.

Redrev:

Thanks. She was a lot of work, and still not done. I rescued her from my folks farm after a tornado dropped the barn on it. I started on it just about one year ago on Christmas break.

I'm having fun reliving my childhood with it, though my wife said I didn't need a tractor to allow me to act like a child.....

A family piece makes it even a better project. Sure pleased you restored it. Sounds to me like the wife is doing her job. Mine says she raised 5 boys, our 4 sons and me. George

What's worse is that she's an only-child city girl, and she just can't understand when I say that if it doesn't take diesel fuel to mow the grass, you don't have enough land !

Frank - heck with what the wife thinks - now you've created this "monster" who posts Farmall pictures on the JD board. That's serious! -- all in jest -

--but in truth, your 70 is something to be proud of. Now if I could only figure out how much land is needed before I can get a Diesel....
