G governor update......

Well, my worst fears were concerned - the governor is just as clapped out as the rest of the tractor seemed to be. The drive gear is shot, the weight holder/gear is also badly worn in the pin holes, as are the weights. The arm shaft has a bit of a bend to it and is badly worn where it leaves the case. So, it looks like it's going to be big bucks to put it back into shape, but I figure I may as well do it right the first time and never have to mess with it again. The weight holder/gear doesn't bother me too much, as I don't have the original fan shaft gear. I understand that they come as a set. I was kind of figuring on replacing them anyway, as I want the governor quiet and the fan shaft to have the correct play. It seems to me that the governor is probably one of the most important items to rebuild correctly, because I imagine it wouldn't run the best otherwise. Does anyone know a source for replacement bearings? Is there a newer style (two piece rather than three) bearing that will work without a bunch of modifications? I haven't checked parts locater yet, but I'm sure not going to reassembly it with the old bearings. Anyway, thanks for the good info in response to my other post.

G-Man:
I had the same problem with my 36 A project. The gov was pretty much a basket case.. A rebuild was the only answer.. I contacted Donnie and Melanie at sharps.. They provided my the bevel gear and fan shaft gear (complete set), and all three bearing assemblies at a very reasonable cost. The gears looked like NOS.. Very nice..

Thanks for the info, Don. I've pretty much decided to just go ahead and replace the weight holder/gear, weights etc with new pieces. I get a pretty good deal on JD parts, so I can rebuild the whole thing with new parts for quite a bit under list price. I've used used parts in other spots on the tractor already, but I'd just as soon keep as much of the engine new or original as possible. I have to replace the cam gear for sure, so I'd rather have a new governor gear and crank gear for it to run against. That should keep everything as tight and quiet as possible.
