Clooney...the Demon 70D has struck again. I started it the other day when it was ~ 10 degrees and left it idle inside the barn to warm it up before use. After it ran for about 5 minutes a heard a "pop" amongst all the other diesel engine noise. Didn't think too much about it and proceeded to back the 70D straight out of the barn. I put it in fourth gear and was heading around the barn and soon detected the power steering was powerless. I'm guessing it sheared the key inside the p/s pump that drives the gears. I'll put a pressure gauge on it, but I'm sure it will read zero. Can this key be replaced by pulling the radiator and fan blade. Must I removed the entire pump from the tractor?? What would cause it break, other than tractor's revenge? Latest score Tractor 7 Mechanic 6!!!

John T, Clooney, Chris.....Fan blades are still turning so I think the shaft is ok. I plan to wait for the weather to warm up a little before I tackle this project. Not sure if the radiator can just be tilted without completely loosening the air intake tube, upper and lower coolant housings and power steering lines. I have a one ton chain hoist and will probably just remove the radiator to be safe. Later.

Bruce:

If you recall, I had the pump start leaking on mine right after the paint.

I was able to remove it from the generator side. I moved the radiator forward as far as it would go (maybe 1 1/2" or so), removed the generator and air cleaner, and I think the radiator shroud.

Also used a piece of masonite to guard my new core.

Frank

Blk, Your Welcome. I about always have to heat those radiator mount bolts to remove them and I wonder what shape the shaft splines will be in??? Let us all know how things turn out. John T

Blksmok, put a piece of tin or old plastic laminate between the radiator fins & fan & see if the pump will come out. Some will & some won't. The fan shroud will have to be unbolted & pulled back. Most that I have worked on won't, but every now & then you will get lucky.....

Dear Blk, the last 3 Ive seen inside (mine and Henry n Bens), that half moon woodruff key that drives the pump gears has been like half sheared, and we installed new ones each time. If the fan turns, I think it may well be that key sheared. If you just pull off the front pump face, seems like you should still be able to get to both gears, shaft and key sufficient to replace it??? Let us know if you can. Ol John T Nordhoff

Blksmok, is the fan still turning? If so it probably either sheared the gear drive key or broke a piston pin, but if it did it sitting still just idling it was probably the key. ~The wrong P/S oil can cause that as well as a worn key or too high a setting on the relief valve.
~That is an interesting idea about just pulling the front section of the P/S pump. It might work as I can't think of any reason the shaft won't slide from the rear pump housing. The problem might be in getting the pump shaft back into the drive shaft coupling, you might have to drill a small hole in the bottom of the fan tube & use a stiff wire in the hole to lift the drive shaft up, then tap the hole & use a short screw with sealer on it to plug the hole. Let us know how it turns out?

Blacksmoke,

I know that i am not clooney but maybe i can help. While i dont have the 70 experience i do have a little on my 60. Are the fan blades still turning?
If they are then you probably busted that key on the gear in there. Now on to the fun part of pulling the pump. The best thing i have found is to remove the hood. Lossen the bottom bolts in the radiator and take a ratchet strap and pull the radiator forward and take the pump out then you can fix it on your work bench and not take a chance of running a tool through the radiator. If you fan blades arent turning you probably have a bad fan shaft coupling right at the back of the pump. And generally if that coupling is bad so is the pump shaft. I put a new shaft in my 60 and it was about 150$ and the coupling is like 30$. Thanks Chris
