Have a jd 60 narrow frotn with power steering.
We have a #45 loader on it. Just replaced on front tire, noticed that rim is cracking around lug bolt holes. Had one other rim do this about 2 years ago. Is there such thing as a stronger wheel? Bolts are tight. Maybe to tight?

I had the same problem on my 720D, found the bolts would loosen and cause the rim to flex. Deere has lug bolts with a larger head that work well. Be sure to check the threads in the hub, if their loose your back to square one. I put Heli-Coils in mine and red thread loc on the bolts. Have had no cracks in 9 years.

I would say the angle and excessive weight are your problem. I'm sure this is one reason JD got away from tricylces on the heavy tractors.

We have a local machine shop that rebuilds implement rims by putting them in a jig and welding in new centers. I haven't seen it done but know a couple of guys that swear by it.

I have two John Deere 70's ... a gas and a diesel. The gas has JD1274R rims and the diesel has JD1290R rims. Who knows if these were originals. I broke up one of the JD1274R rims once myself. From my memory these both look pretty heavy duty like the other gentleman said ... but probably the JD1290 is heavier. I do think loaders are the primary problem. Actually I need a JD1290R rim myself if anyone has a good one. Good luck.

For the heck of it, I just called our local dealer and the JD1290 subs out to a JD1291 rim. Price quoted was $101.00 Hope the parts guy was looking at the right thing!

JDJack...I'm not an expert on rims, but I think the JD1268 rims were the lightweights, then the slightly heavier 1274's and finally the 1290's that were used on the 720's and 730's. I have a 60, several 70's and a couple of 720's and they all have one of these three rim numbers. It's very difficult to find good used JD rims that aren't cracked or "wallowed out" around the lug nuts, especially if they had a loader on them at one time. Later.
