I have a model 830 electric start and I am trying to hook up the red generator warning light on the dash. I purchased a new light and it has one wire (the old one had twon connections). I have the wiring diagram. The gen. wire comes from the gen. terminal on the regulator, to the light then to the gen terminal on the start switch. The gen wire from the regulator has a constant 12 volts on it with nothing on. When i hook up the light and place it in the dash (ground) it comes on and stays on even though the switch is on the off position. I checked the switch and it provides 12 volts when put on th start position. I could run the light directly to the switch and not to the gen. wire but that would bypass the gen. wire and I think that is needed to sense gen. output so the gen light will go off when the tractor starts. Is my voltage regulator bad or am i missing something???

You need the two wire light. It should turn on when the switch is on and off if the generator is charging. You can get a two wire socket from JD, part #AF3894R, it does not have the right length of wires, they will have to be motified. I just done this on a 730ES.

Jody, you will need the original 2 pigtail type dash light [isolated socket] to get the generator light to operate correctly. It hooks between the ignition switch [gen] terminal & the [gen] terminal on the regulator. A one wire only light won't show the voltage difference between the generator & ignition switch.
~You said: "The gen wire from the regulator has a constant 12 volts on it with nothing on"..That could be true but it depends on your battery polarity & ground reference. That tractor has an isolated generator & regulator on it & if you are measuring from either generator output to chassis ground you could show a voltage potential [that's why they isolate the generator]. Your 24 volt system is actually 2 ,12 volt systems that are isolated from the chassis for 24 volts in the isolated starter & generator, but both battery banks have a center tap to chassis ground so you have a separate positive ground & negative ground 12 volt system for the lights & accessories. ~Get [or make] the correct 2 wire [isolated] socket dash light & hook one wire to the ign switch [gen] terminal & hook the other to the [gen] terminal on the voltage regulator & see how it operates. That should get you going.

Jody, I only have 1 wirign diagram for the 830 electric start and it shows the 2 wire type non grounded generator and a 2 wire generator light. Im not sure, but dont think a grounded type light will work, I think it has to be a 2 wire in and out which when balanced, theres no voltage across it turning it off, but with one side (to generator) lower than the other like generator not putting out, it goes on. Cant you purchase a 2 wire non case grounded gen light??? Sorry, Im not real familiar with the 830 2 wire system. Ol John T

Thanks guys. I repaired the 2 wire light socket and got it to work correctly. I was tring to use a light from K&K that I had ordered (one wire light) and its not the right one for the 830.
