I found a very nice stan-hoist loader with hydraulic bucket I would like to put on a JD 50. First question is what is it worth and second what is the besyt way to add a valve for the bucket.

I use a Stanhoist loader on my A with Powertrol. I added hydraulics to the bucket a couple of years ago, with no problems. I mounted a two-spool valve on the loader frame, and ran from the Powertrol to the valve and back to the Powertrol. The valve I used was off a combine to control the reel & header. It has one three way valve(for up-down, my loader doesn't have power down) and one four way for the bucket. I made a lock arm to hold the Powertrol lever in the lift position, but anything like a rope or bungee would work. I also use an added reservoir to get the loader to lift all the way up. The resaervoir is mounted on the rockshaft above the fill hole and piped to the fill hole. This makes for a small leakage around the rockshaft because mine has no seals there. Maybe newer ones would have, I don't know. I made two plates of 1/2" thick steel which I cut to fit the rockshaft with a torch. I tapped them for a setcrew to hold them in place. I made seals out of some foam material and used a lot of Permatex, slid the seals against the end of the rockshaft housing, and held them in place with the steel plates. It worked pretty good, but you can't use the rockshaft with them in place. I found that if I raised the loader high before I parked the tractor it lowered the level of oil in the reservoir and I don't any leaking at all when it sits, and very minor leaks when I use it. You really don't need the extra reservoir if you don't have to lift over about 5-6' high. Hope this helps, that loader is handier than a pocket, even without live hydraulic.

Brian:

Can't tell you what's worth, but as for running the loader and bucket, I think the simplest is draw the hydro pressure from the tractor Pow-R-Trol to a common two lever spool valve ( the flow-thru type), plumb it to the loader and bucket, and the return back to the tractor. The tractor valve will be put in position to send pressure to the twin valve and stay in that position during the loader use. It will not return to center to unless you hit the end of loader cylinder travel. I use it this way on my 70 with a 45W loader with hydro bucket, and I just strap the Pow-R-Trol lever in position with a bungy cord.

Frank , do I need to add a resevoir for additional oil or will the cylinders hold enough ?

Brian:

I topped off the pow-r-trol after I had cycled the loader and filled both sides of the cylinders. If you use return hoses from the non-presurized sides of the cylinders, then the cylinders will return waste oil to the pow-r-trol at the same rate that the pow-r-trol is pumping into the cylinders.
