My dad is looking at a John Deere 60.He said it has been sitting outside for sometime. He is going to verify if the motor is stuck. He said the brakes are stuck. He and I are both familiar with that "other brand" (sorry), so we know nothing about John Deere. My qustions are:

1. Is a 60 a good tractor?
2. If the motor requires rebuild is it a difficult job?
3. Are brake changes tough? Any information you can gives us wuld be helpful.

Thanks

one problem you will have on the 60 is that it will have a cracked block in it. usually it is right between the bolt holes on the bottom. i have overhauled quite a few 60's an they have all been cracked. all were able to get welded or stitched but it was qutie high priced. i was able to located a couple of the already remanned blocks from different companys but they had all been welded also. so just dont be surprised. the power steering will probabaly be wore out. when you over haul that you might as well plan on buying a new shaft for the pump. they are always wore. have the machine surfaced parts machine again if you can feel any wear. when putting it back together i always use lock tight between the surfaces. not very much just a very very thin amount. i have never had one leak. if you have any problems let me know. johndeeregene

Ron,

The 60 is a good tractor - it's an extension of the model A - so there's a lot of experience behind it, and the bugs were well worked out.

If your other brand are red ones of the same era, the brakes are just in reverse - the lined part pushes out against the drum instead of having bands that clamp down around a drum. If you've had any experience with automotive drum brakes, you'll find the JD's are fairly easy.

If you turn your head about 90 degrees from vertial, you'll see that the engine looks a lot like something you're accustomed to - pistons, valves, rocker arms - the same stuff is there - it's just lying sideways. The ignition timing might cause a little head scratching at first, then give you an appreciation of that big flywheel. The upside is that there's only half the work to do - 2 cylinders instead of 4.

Good luck with it if you decide to get it.

Steve

A 60 is a very good tractor, be sure to look at the manifold. If it has power steering , fixing that can get expensive, good luck. Lary
